Lake City girls coach Anderson to take over T-Wolf boys program

“I’m the kind of person that gets a little restless,” said James Anderson, Lake City’s girls basketball coach the past six seasons, who was hired Tuesday as head coach of the Lake City boys. “It’s pretty typical; every 4-6 years that I get restless and do something drastic like this .... I just looked over at the challenge that was sitting there, and wanted to take it on, and see if we could do some things that we did with the girls with the boys, and go for it.”

OPINION: Affiliation with the University of Phoenix is great for Idaho

As a proud Vandal, I know the value of a University of Idaho education. Growing up in the hallways of Memorial Gym and being part of the energy and excitement of this university inspired me to plant my roots here at the U of I. Idaho invested in me, and my accounting degree from the U of I opened doors providing rewarding career opportunities that I did not imagine possible. After a long career in accounting, global banking, consulting and international law firm management, those roots brought me back to my alma mater to bring energy, innovation and a new way of doing things to a very staid, traditional education model.

TRANSGENDER CHANGES: Diminishing in Europe

Dr. Riittakertta Kaltiala, a Finnish Psychiatrist and leading gender expert, explained that transgender changes are diminishing in Scandinavia and European countries. The most valid study, one of the few longitudinal done, on 70 pre-teen boys, vetted the boys for mental health needs because two problems have been detected: 1) a prior mental problem, 2) a desire for a quick “fix” by surgery to transgenderism. Unfortunately the “fix” does not alleviate the mental problem which leads to the conclusion that mental health needs to be attended to first rather than physical transitions. Without the basic problem alleviated, the unsatisfactory result of transgender change is remaining unhappiness, mental confusion and sometimes suicide.

Hard assets have been relatively stable or even growth investments over the last couple of years. It’s not unusual during a high inflation cycle for physical assets to out perform financial ones. In just the last couple of months we have been asked by several folks from neighbors to customers about the potential for wine to be a good investment. I will tell you that for me I’d rather drink wine than hold it as an investment, but as it turns out the answer is fairly lengthy on whether it is a good idea.

THE CHEAP SEATS with STEVE CAMERON: Another spin on spin rate of M's pitchers

The very basic numbers show that Brash (through Sunday) has pitched 21 innings – manager Scott Servais most often uses him to get out of an inning in which there’s big trouble — but he’s given up 26 hits to go with nine walks. That adds up to a sky-high WHIP (walks and hits to innings pitched) of 1.67, along with an ERA of 4.71. You could look at those stats and think that Brash, who has something of a violent delivery, has lost his command. Not so.

POWER OF THE PULPIT: Don’t blame churches

It is unfortunate that we have to blame someone else when we don’t get what we want, but that’s what appears to be happening here. The recent library trustees election revealed the will of the people — the new trustees were voted in, prior trustees were voted out. That is why we have elections. We have the freedom to vote our conscience. But that doesn’t give anyone an excuse to condemn, blame or blast those who think differently. We all have reasons for how we vote, and we should all live with the outcomes.

Often people are confused about which legal documents are used for advanced medical planning. Several estate planning documents have similar and easy to confuse names, which adds to the potential for confusion. Estate planning legal matters are already confusing enough, so it certainly does not help to have similar names for related but completely different documents. Let’s take some of the mystery out of two similarly named documents now: the “Last Will & Testament” and the “Living Will.”

Absolutes are a tough business to be in. They are tough to support and even tough to describe. I find that life is a bell curve which to me means that unless you get to the very fringes of life it is challenging to describe anything in life as all good or all bad. Whether we are discussing the times we live in, or where we live, or people or, yes, wine there are very few of anything that can be described as absolutely good or bad, it's just not the way life and the world works.

Reading boosts IQ. Do audiobooks?

Reading is a wonderful thing. We learn from nonfiction, but stories also teach, exercise the imagination, and expand understanding beyond our own experiences. Reading words on a page requires the brain to make cognitive connections, imagine scenes, and create images without the handholding of TV or video. That kind of creative process, small or large, helps the brain develop literally, by forming more neural connections — at any age.

The Surprising Way Life Insurance Can Wreck Your Estate Plan

Life insurance is a valuable tool to protect your family, and potentially your business interests after your death. Your estate plan is the collection of legal documents that include directions about what should happen to your assets upon your death. Your estate plan could include either a Last Will and Testament or a maybe a Living Trust. One of the most common problems I discover when I review existing planning with clients or potential clients is the failure to coordinate the outcome of a will or trust and the outcome of life insurance proceeds. Let’s examine some of the potential problems this can create so that we can avoid them.

BOOKS: Help kids who feel ‘different’

When I was in the sixth grade, I was tormented by a boy in my class who teased me about my freckles. One day he tried to count the freckles on my face. I wanted to disappear. I didn’t want to come back to school. I went into the school library and picked up a book entitled, “The Different One.” The book was about a girl who was different from her classmates and that she had a hard time enduring the taunts of her classmates. The book described her home life and how she overcame her depression over being “different.” From this book I learned to celebrate my freckles and anything else that made me stand out from the crowd.

Route of the Hiawatha to open next week

Nestled high above the Silver Valley floor, one of North Idaho’s most unique attractions is set to open next week. The Route of the Hiawatha is a 15-mile, rails-to-trails experience unlike any other. With its dark tunnels that require special lights to see through, over trestles that are hundreds of feet above the mountain landscape, it is truly a spectacle.

OPINION: The art of conversation

In the furor of our divisive Idaho politics right now, we have lost the important ability to talk with each other as people. We have lost the art of conversation. TV and internet news is full of reports and images of angry people yelling nasty names at those who disagree with them. Is anything constructive accomplished by the screaming? No. And even those who organize the fight know this.

OPINION: Transparency in numbers: A look into how your tax dollars are being spent

The first rule for any responsible government is that it must do the work of the people, for the people. That is the reason for any government’s existence. But before that work can start, the governing body must first prioritize getting, and more importantly, keeping the trust of its citizens. I am proud to say the state of Idaho is leading the way in the creation of concrete processes to do just that, to better ensure our citizens can trust their state and local government entities.

It is axiomatic that in order to hold a position on a topic you must first think about that topic. A corollary to this is that if you want to persuade someone you must tell them what to think. They also know that while they may not be able to control exactly what you think, they can control what you think about. Think of a Unicorn. Gotcha!

We all know Champagne, right? It’s bubbly and festive and many of us may even think it is sweet, which it can be, but not always. But what really makes this most festive of wines really delicious for the most enthusiastic bubbly drinkers? There are many unique things that allow a sparkling wine to be called Champagne. Of course, it does have to come from the Champagne region of France, this specific geographical area to the north of Burgundy and to the west of Lorraine and Alsace. It is a part of Northeastern France that contributes much to the grapes used in Champagne manufacturing. Two of the three grapes we know quite well, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir the two dominant grapes of Burgundy just to the south of Champagne and their lesser-known compatriot grape Pinot Meunier.

Rule 2023-07 was submitted at the January Idaho GOP 2023 Winter meeting. Due to time constraints the Rule was tabled until the June 2023 Summer meeting. The IFRW President would not be allowed to vote on any state party matters if the Rule is passed. This voting position has been held since 1972. For 50 years the Republican Women have not only had a seat at the table, but also a vote. Quite simply, no vote means no voice.

North Idaho College celebrates 2023 graduates

Grit. Reflection. Kindness. North Idaho College business management and entrepreneurship assistant professor and 2023 commencement speaker Dean Miles urged graduates to remember these cornerstones to be successful as they go out into the world. "Having grit suggests that you have perseverance and passion and will work hard to achieve a long-term goal," he said Friday during the commencement ceremony. "It is related to other personality traits such as resilience and hardiness. Term 'grit' suggests that individuals who possess grit tend to be high achievers. Do you all have grit? I think so. Graduates, you've proven today, by earning your right to be here, to be awarded your certificates and degrees, you have grit. Cornerstone No. 1. Stay gritty."

.As a licensed psychologist specializing in pediatric mental health, it is concerning to see our society in such high distress, with seemingly ever-increasing escalation in anger, hate, conflict, anxiety and division permeating our nation, and our local community. As a nearly lifelong resident of North Idaho, it is heartbreaking to see the loss of civility in our region. Never have neighbors hated and attacked each other as during recent times. Never has there been such a loss of respect and politeness among community members. Our children are watching and listening, and we are letting them down. We have lost our way. Unkindness is ruining our home.

Spirit Lake attracted Chatauquas

There was a “gold rush” to Spirit Lake in 1907, but the “gold” was timber—white pine and Douglas fir. Frederick Blackwell and a host of other entrepreneurs pushed in a railroad, lumber mill, hotels, shops, and school within a couple of years. This boom town was high quality, with a downtown and school built of bricks, electricity and piped heat provided within the city from the mill operation. While logging and lumbering were the most profitable businesses, the natural beauty of Spirit Lake, as well as easy access to the Inland Empire through the new train service, attracted many tourists and caught the eye of the Idaho Chatauqua (Sha TAW’ kwa) organization.

Meyer and McCrea are seeking reelection to the Community Library Network Board of Trustees. They said they decided to file the civil suit in order to take a stand against political mudslinging in North Idaho.

CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Vote yes

A number of years ago, our community members chose to elect me four times to represent them in the Idaho Legislature. My margin of victory rose with each election, and I viewed that as a sign that I had earned their trust and they were happy with the way I was representing them. To the many thousands who voted for me, I remain humbled and grateful for your support. In office I tried to be reasonable, open-minded and fair. In doing so, I was able to earn the respect of members of both parties. So, once again, if you would still trust and support me, I am asking for your vote, this time for a yes vote for the Coeur d’Alene School District levy.

LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote for Meyer and McCrea

As a Coeur d’Alene resident, I can’t vote for library trustees in the Community Library Network, but I can understand the impact of electing freedom-trouncing people on library services throughout North Idaho. They say they want to protect children but what is really happening is an attempt to control the freedom to read for everybody. Untrue scare tactics and a complete absence of understanding of how libraries run are definitely not characteristics of anyone who should be on a library board.

Each state received a pot of money and distributed it to each school district within their state. Coeur d’Alene School District received $21.6 million. These dollars were to be spent by the school district to develop a remote (online) teaching syllabus for all grades impacted and to purchase Chromebook laptops for students that did not have access to a computer at home.

I am very concerned with the race for the Community Library Network trustees. Two of the candidates, Plass and Hanley, are in favor of removing books from the library. Removing books from the library is a nice way of saying banning books. In our society, people complain about too much government in our lives, yet, many are in favor of letting the library monitor the books their children read. You can’t have it both ways. It is the parents’ responsibility to monitor the books their children read not the librarians nor the library trustees.

However, he shared this same message as reasoning for pursuing the CLN trustee role. Ron Hartman, while running for the Zone 1 trustee role with NIC provided more clarity during a podcast by stating the college should reflect the Christian values of the community.

RACIAL PROFILING: Saddened by neighborhood response to visitor

I was incredibly disheartened to receive the below email from the secretary of our neighborhood HOA: “Today, May 5, between 3:00 - 3:06 p.m. we had a young black man walking in the middle of the street heading east on * Avenue, then headed north on * Street towards the city park, turned around, walked south on * Street, stopped at our driveway, started talking with a neighbor… He had a black hoodie on and the crotch of his pants was down to his knees. We noticed that he was making a point of talking to a few people as he walked through the neighborhood. Other neighbors also watched his activity. If you see anything suspicious, please call the police department.”

Winemaking even in the hands of those most talented will occasionally run into problems. Every winemaker will from time to time have an off vintage, but when it comes down to bottles that are actually bad or the preferred wine term “flawed,” most times it is due to something that is beyond the winemaker’s control.

At the end of 2022, the median home value in Kootenai County was just under $550,000. Using this value and subtracting $125,000 homeowner exemption, the median taxable value is $425,000. The current $20 million two-year levy is costing the homeowner $76.17 per $100,000 taxable value. That is about $323.66 a year or about $26.97 per month for a home assessed at that median value. SCHOOL LEVIES: A ‘money hustle’

Imagine, more than 30 years of trying to convince a county of citizens that it’s all about acquiring cash — without ever mentioning adequate academic preparation for our kids and grandkids? Imagine, to have created a system where teachers could merely walk down the hall to vote (in off voting cycles) for ever more education taxes — without providing adequately performing public schools? (Up to 50% of students were/are unable to read and do math at grade levels — and then ‘graduate?’) Imagine school boards thinking they should garner financial support when they provide no public guarantee that they will not initiate CRT, or trans goofiness against ‘our’ kids and their parents?

LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote for Meyer and McCrea

Those of us in elected office all have moments where we reflect upon what it means to be a public servant. For some it’s the appeal of “being somebody.” For others it’s a paycheck, or a commitment to a partisan ideology. The last category is how I describe my dear friend and role model Judy Meyer and her fellow CLN library trustee Regina McCrea.

LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote Meyer and McCrea

In 2017, I was elected a Community Library District (CLN) Trustee. Up until the 2021 election, I had never heard a mention of or seen a written communication that expressed concern regarding any type of sexual content in the libraries.

CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Voting yes, but with a caveat

I have a “YES Coeur d’Alene Schools” sign in my front yard, and plan to vote in favor of the $25 million two-year levy; but this is the last time I will vote for this levy without an independently funded, third-party audit detailing what School District 271 actually needs to offset the state of Idaho funding shortfall. I define “independent funding” as not coming from School District 271 or the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee.

LIBRARY NETWORK ELECTION: Vote for Hanley and Plass

We have an election next month and for the vast majority of us it should be simple. Do we want our children exposed to objectionable books in the children’s and the youth sections in the library? Of course not. Are they in the library? Hundreds of books. Are they a small minority? Yes, but they are there. Even Trustee Regina McCrea, who you should not vote for, admitted as much when she said that she shutters to think that her child would read such material. Why are they not being removed? Because it would be “censorship.” We censor kids all the time. They can’t drive until they are in their middle teens. They can’t drink alcohol, etc. Of course objectionable material should not be given to kids!

Missed opportunity. In the April 26 issue Dr. Shon Hocker Opinion piece on why voting “Yes’ for the Coeur d’Alene school’s levy might be a good idea. This can lead to compression of the sciatic nerve and compromise the piriformis muscle.

You Don’t Have to be Rich to Need an Estate Plan
May 2, 2023 10:22 a.m.

You Don’t Have to be Rich to Need an Estate Plan

One of the most common reasons that people believe that they do not need to prepare an estate plan is because they are not wealthy. However, for most adults, it is important to have a Last Will and Testament or a Living Trust (used to avoid probate), Financial and Health Care Powers of Attorney, and Advanced Directive documents, regardless of your net worth. Let’s look at just one of those important documents, a Last Will and Testament, to understand why it is important to have one:

How to Select Your Estate Executor
May 2, 2023 10:21 a.m.

How to Select Your Estate Executor

When I meet with clients to set up estate plans, I find that a surprising number of people mistakenly believe that they must name their eldest child in their will or their trust as the person in charge of their estate. Even those who understand that they are not legally required to do this may think they are supposed to nominate their eldest child for this duty. There may have been a time when social norms dictated this outcome, but those days are long past, and today I speak to my clients in detail about who the right type of person is to be left in charge of their estate. Let’s review some of the factors that should be considered. Before we discuss those factors, let’s remind ourselves of which estate planning documents we are thinking when we are concerned with nominating someone to be in charge of your estate after your death. We are either thinking of a “Last Will and Testament” (“Will”), or a “Revocable Living Trust (“Trust”). A Will is a document used by you to state what should happen to your possessions and assets when you die, as well as who it is that should carry out those instructions you’ve left. The person you have placed in charge of your estate under a Will is called a “Personal Representative” or “Executor/Executrix”. That person will work under the supervision of the Probate Court Judge to administer your estate.
