LIBRARIES: Let’s address real issues

| May 17, 2023 1:00 AM

We find ourselves amidst a controversy surrounding the books in our libraries. Some claim that these books expose our children to explicit content or LGBTQ+ ideas, pushing for bans and censorship.

However, in this digital age, our children have access to a world of diverse information. It’s our role to guide them, teaching them discernment and respect for all perspectives, rather than banning books.

We must confront the hypocrisy in this debate. It’s inconsistent to condemn certain books while ignoring the behavior of public figures. We’ve seen the disrespectful treatment of women by former President Trump, and numerous instances of child abuse within religious and political communities. The harm done by these real-life actions far outweighs the potential harm of a book.

We should focus on fostering a generation that is educated, empathetic and respectful of all, rather than sheltering them from the diverse realities of the world.

‘Freedom’ doesn’t impose a single religion, oppress minorities, or stage coups against democratically elected governments. If we’re advocating such actions, we’re not standing for ‘freedom,’ but veering toward ‘tyranny.’

We must choose understanding over fear, unity over division. We have the power to create a community that embodies the spirit of freedom.

Enough is enough. Let’s address the real issues, not scapegoat our libraries.
