Evelyn May Spurgeon, 96

| May 17, 2023 1:00 AM

Evelyn was born Feb. 28, 1927, in Sprague, Wash., and passed away April 28, 2023, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Evelyn was raised in Sprague where she graduated from high school in 1945. She worked at the Old National Bank in town. She was set up on a blind date by a girlfriend with a handsome railroad man from out of town. L.C. “Jack” Spurgeon and Mom were married June 15, 1947, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sprague. They settled in Portland, Ore., after their marriage. In 1956, they moved to Coeur d’Alene. Evelyn and Jack had four children, Dave, Gary, Brian and Lisa. While raising four children, Evelyn managed Public Employees Credit Union (PECU) which is now Idaho Central Credit Union. PECU began in a bedroom of our Sixth Street home which she ran from its inception in 1961 until retirement in 1989, after 28 years of service.

After retirement, she and Jack took many trips all around the world, seeing incredible sites. She felt blessed to have been on many great adventures. She was a 50-year member of TOPS (take off pounds sensibly) where she was the weight recorder for 28 years. She and Dad loved going to wine tastings at NIES (North Idaho Enological Society) where they were some of the very first members of that group. She had many friends within those groups as well as her time with the credit union and in this community which she loved and called home. Evelyn was beloved by all who knew her.

Evelyn is survived by her sons, David and Brian Spurgeon of Hayden, Idaho; daughter Lisa (Jeff) Davis of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and grandchildren Mike Spurgeon, Jackson Davis and Nicole (Jake) Lauer; as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Gary; her husband of 66 years, Jack; and her two brothers, Virgil and Ted Bonk.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sprague, Washington.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Yates Funeral Home — Coeur d’Alene Chapel (744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho 83814). Evelyn will be laid to rest at Forest Cemetery.
