PREP SOFTBALL: Coeur d'Alene sweeps into first in IEL with two games remaining

COEUR d’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene senior Kristine Schmidt struck out 27 on the day, including 14 in a three-hitter in the opener, as the Vikings swept the visiting Lake City Timberwolves 5-1 and 8-3 at Larry Schwenke Field to move into first place in the Inland Empire League by one game with two games remaining.

Coeur d’Alene (16-4, 13-3 IEL) can wrap up the league title and top seed to regionals with at least one win in a doubleheader at Post Falls on Thursday. Lake City (15-5, 12-4) travels to Lewiston on Thursday for a twinbill to conclude the regular season.

Delaney Gosch hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning in the opener for Coeur d’Alene.

In the second game, Catherine Bakken had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second and hit a solo home run in the sixth, finishing with three RBIs for Coeur d’Alene.

"I think they’re starting to understand how good they can be," Coeur d'Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said. "It was a mixture of everybody at the plate, and Kristine dominating."

Taylor Hill and Kaydence Constable had RBIs in the second game for Lake City.

POST FALLS — Freshman McKenna Zimmerman had three hits and four RBIs in the first game for the Trojans in a Inland Empire League doubleheader split against the Bengals at Post Falls High.

Junior Katie Berg had three hits and a run scored for Post Falls in the first game.

Sophomore Summer Dan had three hits in the second game for Post Falls (8-12, 7-9 IEL), which hosts Coeur d’Alene in a doubleheader on Thursday.

Caitrin Reel hit a two-run home run and finished with four RBIs in the second game for Lewiston (11-11, 10-6), which hosts Lake City in a doubleheader on Thursday.

ST. MARIES — Lumberjack Taci Watkins struck out 31 of 41 batters faced, including 19 in the nightcap of a nonleague sweep of the Badgers at City Park.

Berkli McGreal and Watkins had two RBIs each for St. Maries in the opener. Watkins, along with Stacie Mitchell, had two RBIs in the second game for the Lumberjacks (16-3), who face Timberlake in a single game today at 4 in Spirit Lake.

Bonners Ferry (2-12) opens the best-of-3 game 3A District 1 tournament on Monday at Timberlake High.
