GRADUATION: Snapshot in time

In between the mother’s swollen eyes with tears she finds herself able to capture her baby up there on the stage. From being in diapers to now proudly sporting her cap and gown ready to receive her diploma. Father’s lips quiver as he endeavors in breaking a smile rather than a tear but in the moment both break and tears of elation cascade down his face. From Little League practice and sundaes afterward to now graduation and her whole future afterward. Where did time go? How can my baby once just a child in my arms be a grown adult heading out into the world?

REBUTTAL: Oh dear, John

It is difficult to know where to begin in addressing the myriad inaccuracies and contradictions in John Huizinga’s letter of April 20 (OPINIONS: Ignorance is a right). While it is true that the United States is not a true democracy neither are we a “representative republic,” a term which is basically two words which mean the same thing. We are a constitutional or constitution-based republic. As such, we rely on the Constitution as the basis of our laws, our procedures for filling constitutional offices and vacancies, and to define the roles and responsibilities of those positions (offices) articulated therein. As for “party rules” being a means by which we “choose people to represent us,” there is simply no constitutional basis for parties to exist, let alone to be determinative in how this nation’s citizens select their representatives.

The negative effects of immobilization (lack of proper motion) begin as soon as four hours after an injury! These negative effects are not just a problem for the muscles and joints, but they also affect your heart, lungs and nervous system. These changes can become nearly irreversible if they continue beyond eight weeks.

Osteoporosis: The quality of the stick

The quality of our bones has been a subject of concern for several decades now. Our focus seems to always be on bone density. What seems to be ignored is bone quality. I like to compare it to a stick: a green stick is flexible and gives when it is bent and bounces back more easily. This is healthy bone; quality bone. A brown, dried up stick when bent will snap. It takes much less force to break it than does a green one. This is unhealthy bone – osteoporosis, or bone which has been forced to be unnaturally more dense (via drugs).

The expanding reach of northwest wines

Back in the late 1970s, when the California wine industry was in its infancy, there was a wine competition held in France where wines from California were tasted blind and judged versus a lineup of French Premier and Grand Cru wines. The competition, the results and the “tsunami” of change it set off in the wine industry is the subject of the movie Bottle Shock. The movie (starring the late actors Alan Rickman and Dennis Farina, among other notables) is wonderful. A great story no doubt, but the movie is also illuminating on how the reach of California wine grew. It forever changed the wine industry there, and in many ways, for the entire industry in the U.S.

As conservatives, we know that government doesn’t create jobs, but it can create a favorable (or unfavorable) environment for businesses to grow and succeed. We also know that states compete against each other for businesses and jobs, using every tool at their disposal. He restates HUD’s guidelines stating that African Americans and Hispanics are arrested, convicted and incarcerated at rates disproportionate to their share of the general population. What Cooper leaves out is that these two groups also commit the same disproportionate amount of crime. Check the crime rates of major cities throughout the United States. It wasn’t too many years ago the head of HUD whose first name was Sam and was referred to as Silent Sam was dismissed for corrupt practices.

Legislators worked hard to protect property rights

I am writing this in response to Miss Sandy Patano who represents the North Idaho Political Action Committee (NIPAC) and her last 1/2 page guest opinion titled “Some legislators threatened your private property rights.” She apparently misunderstood the policy goals of the majority of us incumbent legislators from North Idaho and why we were co-sponsors of HB586. I am and have always been pro-private property rights. I was raised on a large farm 65 miles south of here. I have owned property in North Idaho since 1970: a trailer park and marina on Lake Pend Oreille for four years; I was a real estate broker, builder and developer for 12 years; and for the last 25 years I have owned income property in North Idaho. My home on acreage is located near Athol. I am a member and contributor to the Northwest Property Owners Association.

TRANSIT: Smells like tax increase

We have been seeing articles about how much is being done behind the scenes to make the transit system better and now suddenly KMPO and Glenn Miles essentially want to take it from the county? Why is that? Are the county commissioners behind adding another layer of bureaucracy? I thought they said they were against that. But then again, politicians lie. Who will pay for more government jobs? I am guessing that it is another way to tax people who are overburdened already.

Below are the ten things Mayo Clinic lists as the top problems.

Belly after baby

Cyndy would have never thought that her belly could stretch and a baby could grow that big over 38 weeks. She was amazed what her body did, and with such brilliance that a beautiful baby was born. What she couldn't imagine now, however, was that her "poochy " belly wouldn't go away like she thought it would, and every time she moved it would stick out instead of go in. She became worried and frustrated. She had always had a tight tummy and now she felt like she wasn't herself.

The public place name game

Sunday’s editorial in the Press caught my attention with these opening lines ... “Post Falls isn’t keen on naming things after leading citizens. OK, they made an exception for the name of the town — honoring German immigrant Frederick Post — who’s also got a kindergarten named after him. And posthumously, the venerable Hilde Kellogg had a 5-acre park named after her, but for the most part, Post Falls infrastructure leans toward titles like River City This, Ponderosa That and Mullan Trail The Other.”

Step three: What are your legal options?

Now that you found the right lawyer and had your initial consultation — now what? During your initial consult with your lawyer, you should have discussed all the options available to you. In family law (divorce, paternity, child support, custody or modification of a pre-existing order, guardianship, grandparent rights, et cetera), not every matter needs to be fully litigated. Other options include the following:

Is your immune system ready for allergy season?

If you're a seasonal allergy sufferer, you know that few things can drain the joy out of warmer weather like the misery of red, itchy eyes, continuous sneezing and postnasal drip. At least one out of every five Americans suffers from allergies. Pollen from trees, weeds and grasses are the primary culprits behind seasonal allergies.

Washington's wine is growing up

Every appellation has gone through it. The best go through it sooner rather than later and also go through it multiple times revisiting the issue of terroir driven winemaking. Oregon has yet to go through it as they continue to overemphasize terroir driven acid levels in their Pinot Noir. California has watched as the pendulum of overly done Chardonnay has swung towards overly lean stainless steel Chardonnay, and is now starting to settle in the middle with an array of finely honed elegantly balanced white wines.

GARBAGE: Low bid should win

I wanted to take a minute to comment on the contract for the garbage removal in the city. There were three bids and I assume each of the bidders was smart enough to read the requirements and scope of work required to bid. Once the bids were in and checked by the finance department, the contract was given to the lowest bidder. That is generally the way it works. If all specifications were followed in the bid process and the lowest bidder met that requirement, the lowest bidder gets the bid. I have built many houses in Kootenai County and I always worked on that premise.

Faith-based wellness

For many people, getting started with a health and fitness program can be a daunting task. Most people struggle with the day-to-day demands of a busy schedule and limited income — making time spent at the gym, acquiring a membership or hiring a personal trainer difficult, if not impossible. However, there is one area that many of us do make time for and that would be our faith. We often allow time in our busy lives to seek the fellowship found in our spiritual pursuits.

Is it sweet?

Sweet wine versus dry wine is one of least understood and potentially most confusing aspects of wine. Much of this comes from the way our taste buds and our brain work together. Fruit is sweet. Take a bite of most any fruit — from berries to peaches and apples and even citrus — and the unique flavors of the fruit register in our brains through our taste buds, but the sugar content of the fruit registers also. In fact, human taste buds only register four flavors: sweet, sour, salty and bitter. Smell a freshly cut peach, though, and many of the same “flavors,” including sweetness, register in our sense of smell. The short version is when we smell or taste fruit, our brains go to sweet.

PAC: The untold story

BILL: Christ comes first

It is without exception that I take a swipe at the editor in his article published April 10, “Standing up for all the right reasons,” and his assumption that Governor Butch Otter took a difficult task in being perceived as taking a swipe at the Bible by vetoing a so-called misguided act of panderism. The editor’s perception is probably substantiated, in some cases, that lawmakers may have been trying to win points for themselves amongst evangelical Christians in their attempts at including the Bible in the public school curriculums. It does not answer the more difficult question, however, of secular indoctrination being rated superior to religious direction for a badly hurting American society fraught with ever increasing moral decay.

Thrive, don't just survive: Finding the reason you are sick, tired or in pain

Most acute and chronic diseases are created by exposure to toxins, microbes, allergens, poor diet, stress and mechanical injury. Any perturbation to the body by any of those six items will cause a change in how the body functions: an adaptation for the good or bad. Overtime with consistent attack from one or any combination of those items the body falls ill. Functional medicine involves the use of all the tools available: laboratory testing, acupuncture, chiropractic, nutrition, supplements, herbals, vitamins/minerals, genetic testing and most importantly listening to the you, the patient.

Giving, accepting thanks

I remember waking up at five o’clock on Christmas morning as a 4-year-old excited to see if I made Santa’s good list. Still wearing slipper-socks and pajamas unwrapped the night before; I quietly peek from my bedroom door to see my sister sitting under our Christmas tree. Waking earlier than I, she plugs in the tree lights and stares at the multicolored glass bulbs sparkling on the tree. I quietly sit next to her and am memorized by the twinkle of the glass bulbs that redirect their light to the shiny paper and ribbon under the evergreen. We look at each other and smile. For this memory, I am thankful.

Causes of presbycusis include changes within the inner ear (damage to the tiny hair cells that pick up sound), changes in the middle ear (stiffening of the tympanic membrane and ossicles), complex changes along the nerve pathway leading to the brain, and cognitive changes in the brain.

Ear problems and your teeth

Many people suffer from problems related to their ears such as ear pain, a feeling of pressure of fullness in the ear, or ringing in the ears (tinnitus). You may be surprised to learn that they can be related to an unbalanced dental bite — the way your teeth come together every time you swallow. And you do this 2,000 to 3,000 times each day.

It takes guts to oppose something with a name that includes “freedom” or “patriot” in it. The '600 pound gorilla'

For several years the United States has topped the world rankings in total wine consumption. In 2015, the US represented 11.5 percent of the consumption of all wine consumed worldwide, topping off at nearly 3.5 million 9-liter cases (a case being 12 750ml bottles for the 9L total). While the US still lags on per capita consumption — not even cracking the top 10 in this statistic — it is one of the only countries (including the developed countries of the EU) where consumption per capita and total is growing. In 2014, consumption in the USA grew by 3.5 percent over 2013, while worldwide consumption grew at only .5 percent. While much of the wine we drink is domestically produced, we also rank third among all countries for importing wine.

A new type of corvette

A new type of corvette

The Republic of China has a new corvette. The iconic 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray or the new supercharged Z06 is probably what you envision, but the Chinese corvette, delivered in December, 2014, is a bit larger. It weighs in at 500 tons and can cruise in excess of 40 knots (46 miles per hour) with a crew of 41. The Tuo Jiang, called the “carrier killer,” is a new generation warship, and is the first of 12 “Wave Piercing Catamarans” to be purchased by the island of Taiwan. Armed with 16 missiles, it will boost Taiwan’s defense capabilities against its massive neighbor, mainland China, the communist nation known as the People’s Republic of China. A corvette is the smallest class of vessel to be a proper warship. Above the size of a corvette class is the frigate, destroyer, cruiser, and the largest is the aircraft carrier.

I have come to understand that these old-fashioned characteristics have lost their value in the halls of liberals and progressives but they still have value among us old-fashioned conservatives and, of course, Hillary rates an F in all of them.

VOTE: What to look for

Deciding for whom to vote is one of the most important and sacred civic duties we have as Americans, and that doesn’t apply solely to presidential candidates. It goes all the way down the ticket, to the local elections on the ballot. In fact, one could argue that a voter has more to consider in small time races closer to home, because it is there — more so than in any national presidential election — that a person’s connections to the local community and their values in relation to those of that community can and should be taken into account.

Socialism: Could it happen here?

Since we could elect a president who is, in all respects, a socialist, it would be good for us to understand what the term means. When we look at Nazi Germany we somehow conclude that they were a people who readily accepted collectivist thinking, and that we could never let that happen here.

Please, would someone with common sense step forward and define the true issue in this discussion of more jail space being required. Instead of more jail space at atrocious cost, we need a revision of the judicial system.
