Cardinals, Walla Walla split in softball

SOFTBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — Abby Howard hit a two-run homer in a seven-run fifth inning and finished with four RBIs as North Idaho College defeated Walla Walla Community College 11-4 in the first game of a Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday at Lake City High.

Walla Walla came back to win the nightcap 10-9.

Chloe McIntosh went 3 for 4 and scored two runs in the opener for NIC (18-6, 12-4 NWAC), and Brittany Gay went 4 for 4. Nikki Miller homered to lead off the bottom of the fifth for the Cardinals, and Katie Barron added a two-run homer later in the inning.

In the second game, Jacie McDaniels’ RBI double in the top of the seventh for Walla Walla (11-13, 9-5) broke a 9-all tie. Gay went 3 for 5, including a homer, for NIC, which returns to action Saturday and Sunday at an NWAC crossover tournament in Yakima.

NIC women tied for second

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Nicole Miller of North Idaho College shot 83 and is tied for third, and the Cardinal women are tied for second after the first round of the Highline Showdown at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club.

NIC’s men are in sixth after the first round. Braydon Swapp of the Cardinals shot 76 and is tied for ninth.

The tourney concludes today.
