Glen Howard Durand, 89

| April 13, 2016 9:00 PM

Glen Howard Durand passed away April 5, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at Kootenai Health. He was born Aug. 10, 1926, to John and Lemonde Durand in Garden County, Neb.

His family moved to Oakland, Calif., when he was 5 years old and he graduated from Fremont High School in June 1944. In August 1944, he enlisted in the Navy sure that he would be sent to San Diego for training. Instead he was sent to Farragut Naval Training Center where he served as a dental technician.

It was during his time at Farragut Naval Training Center that he met the love of his life, Lois Loveless, at the USO in Sandpoint, Idaho. They were married at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Sparks, Nev., on Oct. 27, 1946, by his uncle Reverend Basil Daugherty. They lived in Alameda, Calif., until 1950. Missing North Idaho, Glen and Lois returned to Coeur d’Alene. Together they raised their daughter, Lynn Durand, and son Charles (Chuck) Durand.

One of Glen’s greatest joys was time spent with his children and grandchildren. He and Lois always had an open door for family, extended family and friends. He had an incredible sense of humor and loved practical jokes. He loved giving his grandchildren a kick in the pants as they tried to pass his chair.

Glen was a busy man. Glen was employed for 33 years by GTE. He loved the outdoors and camping with friends and family, spending time in his woodworking shop, golfing, bowling and was always ready to participate in the next parade.

Another great passion of Glen’s was music. He was an exceptional drummer who played with numerous bands throughout the years. He played with all the area’s great jazz musicians including: Pearl Harwood, John Harwood, Bob Nobis, Ray Barker, Ralph Holmberg, Tootie James, Harold Treadwell, Bill Reid, Alec Bedini, Louie Koepen and Dick Kuck, among many other gifted musicians.

Glen’s soft heart and compassion for others was evident by the endearing tears of love in his eyes and commitment to his chosen organizations. He was a 53-year member of The Masonic Kootenai Lodge No. 24, a 50-year Scottish Rite Mason, a 50-year member of Calam Shriners, Calam Legion of Honor, a 52-year member of Queen Esther Chapter No. 12 order of the Eastern Star and a member of The Musicians Union.

Glen is survived by his wife, Lois; daughter Lynn; son Chuck; daughter-in-law Anita; grandchildren Mathew (Mi Young) Smith, Patrick (Lisa) Tulleners, Michelle Tulleners, Jannica (Julian) Paraschiv, Tammy (Loni) McCloud, Dawn (Pat) McClary and Sarah Birley; and great-grandchildren Alannah, Gabrielle, Ashlynn, Bridgette, Cordelia, Isabelle, Tyler, Madison, Daegan, Declan, Drayden, Kaysha and Taylor.

Our husband, father, grandfather, friend and source of love and commitment will be sorely missed.

There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 501 Wallace St., Coeur d’Alene.

In lieu of flower, memorials on Glen’s behalf can be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 911 W. Fifth Ave., Spokane, WA 99204.
