NORTH IDAHO SPORTS BANQUET: Post Falls hauls in the awards again
COEUR d’ALENE — They ran through the rest of the state — and beyond — in the past season on the wrestling mats.
On Saturday night, the Post Falls Trojan wrestlers had another reason to celebrate as coach Pete Reardon was named Coach of the Year for Male Sports in 5A-4A, the Trojans won Male Team of the Year for 5A-4A and senior Alius De La Rosa was named top wrestler in 5A-4A during the 54th annual North Idaho Sports Banquet at the Best Western Plus Coeur d’Alene Inn.
Post Falls wrestling was named co-Team of the Year along with the basketball team in 2015. After repeating as 5A champions in Pocatello this year, the Trojans had it all to themselves.
North Idaho College sophomore Braian Angola-Rodas was named College Male Athlete of the Year after leading the Cardinals to a 31-2 finish, and trip to the NJCAA tournament for the first time since 1997. The NIC men’s basketball team shared North Idaho Team of the Year with the Idaho women’s soccer team.
Sandpoint senior Madison Schoening, who also was named co-Girls Basketball Player of the Year in 5A-4A, as well as co-Girls Soccer Player of the Year, was named Female Athlete of the Year in 5A-4A. Timberlake junior Allison Kirby, who led the Tigers to their first state 3A girls basketball championship in school history in February, was named Female Athlete of the Year for 3A-1A.
Longtime Coeur d’Alene High softball coach Larry Bieber, who was inducted into the Idaho Hall of Fame earlier in the night, was named Coach of the Year for Female Sports in 5A-4A after leading the Vikings to a runner-up finish in the 2015 state 5A tournament at Post Falls High.
Individual awards for other high school sports were also presented.
Also at the banquet, former Moscow girls basketball coach Sally Greene, former Idaho defensive end Marvin Washington, former Idaho football player and wrestler Bob McCray and former Kamiah coach Bob Squires were inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame. The 1964 state champion Kellogg boys basketball team, coached by Don Haynes, was also honored.
