PREP BASEBALL: Lake City, 5A IEL-leading Cd'A split

| April 27, 2016 9:00 PM

COEUR d’ALENE — In a pair of gems on the mound, the Lake City Timberwolves and Coeur d’Alene Vikings settled for the split in a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Tuesday at Lake City High.

In the opener, Lake City senior Dominic Conigliaro struck out 10 and sophomore Kyle Manzardo went 4 for 4 with four runs scored at the Timberwolves beat the Vikings 10-3.

“I thought Dom competed extremely well in the first game,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “He was in the zone from the first pitch to the last pitch and kept his pitch count fairly low. He located the ball low in the zone throughout the game, which was beneficial — not only because he had 10 strikeouts — but got a lot of ground ball outs. He pitched to contact and was real effective. Kyle swung the bat really well in the first game. He was hitting line drives and was on base all day.”

“In our first game, we weren’t very locked in with our approaches at the plate,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “I just think we didn’t attack our plan as hitters today. When we commit to our plan, we take care of business. We were a little long with our swings. Dom’s a good pitcher and when you give a good pitcher momentum, they usually do their jobs.”

Jonny Plum went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Daniel Gunnerson allowed one earned run in the second game as the Vikings beat the Timberwolves 13-2 in six innings.

“We did a great job of bouncing back and did a good job of doing what Viking baseball is all about,” Mahin said. “The one thing about these guys is they’re resilient. Two-out hitting kind of separates good teams. In the first game, Lake City kind of hurt us and in the second game, the ball shifted.”

Coeur d’Alene (13-5, 6-2 5A IEL) travels to Lewiston on Friday.

Lake City (11-7, 4-4) plays a doubleheader at Post Falls on Saturday.

Lewiston, with a sweep at Post Falls in other league play on Tuesday, is 13-4, 4-4. Both Lake City and Lewiston trail Coeur d’Alene by two games for the league lead with each having four games remaining. Post Falls is 12-8, 2-6.

Tanner Criswell went 3 for 3 with a run scored in the second game for Lake City.

“Coeur d’Alene’s a good team and they’ve got a never-say-die mentality,” Manzardo said. “But the league in general is that way. It’s going to be a battle all the way until the end. I don’t think there’s a benefit to being the No. 1, 2, 3 or 4 seed. Everyone has an opportunity to beat anyone on any given day. Whoever makes the fewest amount of mistakes will come out on top.”

POST FALLS — The Trojans were swept by the Bengals in a 5A Inland Empire League matchup at Post Falls High.

In the opener, Riley Way finished with two doubles and four RBIs for Lewiston.

“Our pitchers did a great job,” Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. “(Jared) Porter had five strikeouts and I was proud of the way our pitchers competed all day. Hitting wise, we need to work on getting clutch RBIs. We’re just missing those hits to get us over the top.”

Chaz Bailey doubled to score Wyatt Setian in the first game for Post Falls, one of hits team-high two hits in the game.

In the nightcap, Lewiston took advantage of four Post Falls errors in the seventh inning to get a sweep, despite only getting four hits in the game.

“Our pitching today was impressive, especially in the second game,” Frank said. “We just had a breakdown defensively in the seventh.”

Matt Lebsock singled to score Bailey for Post Falls (12-8, 2-6 5A IEL), which hosts Lake City on Saturday for a pair.

SANDPOINT — Chris Schilling struck out seven over 6 2/3 innings and JJ Mackesy hit a two-run single to cap a five-run third inning as the Hawks beat the Bulldogs in the first game of a 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Memorial Field.

“It was a great game,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said of the first game. “Chris pitched outstanding and didn’t give up an earned run. He was very efficient. Ryan (Pote) came in and got the save. I loved the competitiveness of both pitchers. It was also nice to see guys hitting and producing throughout the entire lineup. Jared (McDaniel), Dylan (Bradbury) and Joe (Strietzel) had two hits each.”

In the nightcap, Tyler Blood had three RBIs and Jared McDaniel drove in two for the Hawks, who were unable to hold a lead in the 11th inning.

“This was a wild one,” coach Bradbury said of the second game. “The lead changed hands a few times, both teams competed well, and it went down to the last pitch. We had our chances to win the game a couple of different times, but our defense let us down a little bit.”

Lakeland (7-11, 3-3 4A IEL) hosts Sandpoint in a doubleheader on Saturday at Gorton Field.

Plunkett struck out seven in four innings of relief for Timberlake (8-10, 4-2 IML), which plays a doubleheader at Priest River on Saturday.

“Kellogg’s pitchers threw well, making it difficult for us to maintain our early momentum,” Timberlake coach Matt George said. “They shut down the heart of our order multiple times.”
