MOSCOW — Katie Kastning went 5 for 6 with four RBIs and three runs scored for the Lakeland Hawks in a 19-18 win in the second game of a 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Thursday against the Moscow Bears at Ghormley Field.

Lakeland lost the opening game 17-16 after the Bears scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“We were hitting the ball well, we just ended up letting back in the first game,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. “In the second game, we just kept battling and were able to send it to extra innings. Our girls worked hard as a team. Moscow is tough competition for us.”

It was the second high-scoring doubleheader between the teams in six days. Lakeland beat Moscow 14-13 and 24-14 at home last Saturday.

Lakeland (6-6, 3-1 4A IEL) hosts Timberlake today.

It was hard lesson learned and hopefully they’ll put it together (today). In the second half of the game, we started to play a lot better and did some good things.”

ST. MARIES — The Lumberjacks outhit the visiting Scotties from Rockford, Wash., 11-6, and had the tying run on third base in the bottom of the seventh, but left nine on base total in the nonleague loss.

“Their pitcher did a good job changing speeds,” St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. “We weren’t very good outs the first five innings; we were swinging at pitches that weren’t strikes. I wouldn’t call her overpowering, but she did a very good job with the craft of pitching.”
