COEUR d’ALENE — Preston Benson drove in two runs in the first game and Jake Pfennigs struck out four in 5 1/3 innings as the Post Falls Trojans beat the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 9-4 in the first game of a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Friday at Ted Page Field.

Later, Jackson Sumner struck out five as the Vikings topped the Trojans 6-1 to earn the split.

“We just had a case of being a little too overconfident in the first game and committing too many errors,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “Jackson did a great job in the second game of throwing strikes.”

Coeur d’Alene scored four of its six runs with two outs in the respective innings.

“We’ve been doing a great job with timely hitting this year,” Mahin said. “Any time you can get runners in scoring position and get some runs, it’s a good thing. Post Falls hurt us in the first game with runs with two outs. With each loss, it’s a learning experience. You’ve got to play each game one pitch at a time, and I told the kids you’re only as good as your last game.”

Coeur d’Alene (12-4, 5-1 5A IEL) plays at Lake City on Tuesday.

Post Falls (12-6, 2-4) hosts Lewiston on Tuesday.

Lake City (9-5, 2-2) plays at Lewiston (10-3, 1-3) today.
