Viking girls doubles

teams survive at Inland Empire tourney

SPOKANE — Two Coeur d’Alene girls doubles teams stayed alive after each team lost their first match and won three in a row in the Inland Empire tournament.

Today’s consolation finals will be at Mt. Spokane.

The Viking No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Swider and Lauren Carlsen played at Mead High and went 3-1. They will each need to win two matches today in order to reach the consolation championship after they lost their first match to a team from Lewis and Clark.

“There were 50 to 60 different schools there,” Coeur d’Alene coach Laura Taylor said. “To make it to day two is a pretty good feat for these kids.”

The Cd’A No. 2 doubles team of Hannah Johnson and Kayla Fagan will also play in the consolation bracket, after going 3-1 at Rogers High.

The Lake City mixed doubles team of Chris Vargas and CC Cates went 2-1, beating teams from Ferris and Freeman in straight sets to advance to the consolation semifinals.

Both boys singles teams went 1-2 and No. 1 boys singles player Jack DuCoeur went 3-1, beating Ferris in three sets, sweeping Southridge and Cheney before being eliminated by Lewis and Clark in straight sets.

“Jack played really well and had a great day today,” Lake City boys coach Bob Brunn said. “He did a great job, but ran into the top overall seed from Lewis and Clark.”

Lake City’s Sydney Jackson beat Lakeland’s Ashley Rotchford in straight sets, then was eliminated by Linnea Love of Lewis and Clark in straight sets.
