GUNS: Wake up to solutions

Since Liberal/Progressives are more apt to gather in gun free zones, due to their belief that guns cause crime, they are more vulnerable to terrorist attacks than most of we pro-gun advocates. Given the fact that terrorists are known to attack soft (unarmed) targets, a number of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs around the country are now advocating their citizens carry concealed firearms to counter terrorists’ attacks. Some universities have seen the light and are allowing armed students on campus. Hopefully, the Liberals/Progressives in both political parties will wake up and smell the roses.

THANKS: For unexpected gift

Just wanted to send a huge thank you to the party that delivered an anonymous Christmas card to me on December 11th. Your words moved me to tears. It has been a challenging year and a half for myself, and my family. We lost our dad unexpectedly last April. He was a huge part of our lives. While doing our best to stay positive, and to be in the Christmas Spirit for the kids, it’s been a struggle. I’m also a single parent to the most beautiful little boy. The money you put in this card allowed me to give my son a special Christmas this year, and to get ahead. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you for putting a smile on my face. I will continue to show kindness and gratitude. Someday I hope to do something of this magnitude for someone else. Merry Christmas from my family to yours!

RATHDRUM: Good work, city

TAXES: Cut by consolidating

I hope the state of Idaho and local cities and counties can cut taxes on many items to lessen the burdens on Idaho residents. One thing I’ve seen in another state I lived in, tax breaks that saved its citizens large amounts of money paid on taxes. That state reduced their taxes by allowing only one public school district per county. Idaho has 44 counties and 115 public school districts for a little over 1.5 million total population for the entire state. That is poor tax money usage — a total ripoff to taxpayers. Idaho also could consolidate many city, county and state government entities to reduce taxes, improve services and coverage to citizens’ needs. For example, one command situation for police — a metropolitan police department combining local police agencies, cities and county into a single command unit with varied substations spread around the county. State police would be excluded. Same with local fire departments consolidating; I’ve seen government agencies do this in a state where I previously lived and it improved services while cutting taxes.

TAXES: Ease by consolidating

The best Christmas present: You

The effort to raise $170,000 through Press Christmas for All, to help more than 2,000 Kootenai County families and nearly 7,000 individuals this holiday season, was massive. Fueled by a strong desire to do good — and tired of falling short of goal the previous three years — the mission was accomplished at the last minute, thanks to by far the biggest donation of the campaign. Anonymous in Athol and his lovely wife, your $20,000 made Christmas merry for literally hundreds of people this year.

MOTHERS: Thanks for vets' help

The local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of America would like to thank Bardenay restaurant for supporting our local troops. They donated some of the proceeds from Monday night’s meals to our organization. That money goes toward sending care packages to local soldiers who are deployed. We also lend support to our local Veteran organizations. The restaurant allowed us to set up a table by the front door with a small display showing what the Blue Star Moms are about. Peter and the staff were very kind to us and we spoke to many generous patrons. Again, thank you to Bardenay and their patrons for their generosity. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

There is some irony in the precarious position the Gem State has found itself. Despite setting a goal in 2010 for 60 percent of Idaho’s young people under age 34 to attend postsecondary education, the Idaho Legislature then decided the way to encourage young people to attend college is to significantly inflate the tuition costs for those would-be students in the subsequent years that followed.

Tuition plan reeks of California

In regards to Bill Moran’s editorial I must say that he is insulting many fellow Idahoans when he says that opposition to his tax initiative is un-American. Just because some of us do not agree with his ideas about taxing a product that only a portion of the Idaho population utilizes does not make us un-American. No one is opposing better tuition but we are already paying taxes for education and anyone who can read their property tax statement can see how much they are paying for education already.

URDs: Shouldn't even be here

Really, CDA? An Urban Renewal District? URDs come from the late ’60s and the decaying cores of inner cities where vast tracts of abandoned industrial buildings and slums of barely habitable apartments (and here’s the important bit) had no one to clear the detritus and/or develop the areas for industrial or residential use. Then the city stepped in to make the redevelopment happen and they used funds in a URD to do so.

COLUMN: And I'll raise his point

Excellent My Turn column from Marvin George Miller in the Dec. 11 CDA Press. I am in 100 percent agreement with everything he said. Let me go a step beyond Mr. Miller’s remarks and add there can be little or no compromising with today’s Democratic Party. At least not for anyone with any remnant of a moral compass or even with any regard for our constitution or for anyone who knows wealth redistribution to be a losing game. All of these are in direct opposition to the beliefs and characters of our Founding Fathers and to what was once the basic core of this country. Liberalism — and progressivism — will be the ruination of this great nation if they are allowed to continue in power.

Thank you so much to the man at Capone’s in Post Falls. Not only did he move his vehicle to accommodate my mom and my 90-year-old mother in law, but after lunch my mother in law fell. My mom flagged him down and he carefully lifted my mother in law into the car. She was lying on her back. He was so helpful!

LIBERALS: Behind tuition proposal

I have never smoked in my life. However, the stoptuitionhikes idea of Mr. Moran’s and seconded by the Editor of this “news” paper is unconscionable. It is typical of liberals. They like to take the easy way out which is to add taxes.

Much at stake in Idaho's forests

The West is in crisis. Annual forest mortality is at a 50 year high and 85 percent of this annual forest mortality is occurring on National Forest System lands. According to the University of Idaho, nearly 12 percent of federal forestland in Idaho is “standing dead”—dead trees still standing in a forest. Ninety-four percent of those standing dead acres in Idaho are located in federal ownership. These acres are at high risk of uncharacteristically intense fire due to overcrowding of dead stock.

GUNS: Beware this sneak assault

I just saw that President Obama has come up with a way to shut down gun shows, without Congress. Almost all dealers, at gun shows, have a Federal Firearms License, and so, they do background checks with every gun purchase. It is the “Must do something” syndrome, even when it is not the problem. Pres. Obama, and all law enforcement agencies including the FBI know that criminals, and mass murderers do not get their weapons from gun shows. Not one mass murderer got their weapon from a gun show. Sandy Hook from his mother, the San Bernardino shooters got theirs from a gun dealer. This is the reason that any reasonable effort to curb gun violence is defeated, because Congress is not a mob, and they are not prone to “Knee Jerk” legislation.

Modern myth: HIV and AIDS

Sholeh Patrick makes interesting observations in her “Get to zero on this test” article published in the Dec. 1 edition of the Press but fails to eliminate a major myth still held today; the myth that the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the sole cause of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). She points out that it is an infectious virus which may or may not (my emphasis) cause AIDS. Sholeh continues that there were 39 million people dead from AIDS at last count. She, however misstates that 36 million people are living with it (AIDS) today. That segment of the population would explain that some are diagnosed with HIV but they may not ever acquire AIDS; it is unrelated with treatment for HIV. This means that while there may be a correlation of HIV to AIDS it is not an absolute. The causative agent of an infectious disease was defined by Robert Koch through Koch’s Postulates, accepted universally by the medical community. One says that a germ must be found in all cases of the disease. At least 10 to 20 percent of all AIDS patients have no active HIV at all. The rest have only the antibodies. Another says that the virus must cause sickness when injected into a healthy host. HIV tests on animals have never produced AIDS. What then causes AIDS?

Gut pain, bloating and indigestion: Your tummy is telling you something

The holidays are upon us and are the signs and symptoms of tummy trouble. Painful swelling, bloating, gas, and indigestion along with constipation or diarrhea are all issues associated with a condition called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) They can be a result of overeating during the holidays. It can be broken further into other categories like irritable bowel syndrome with constipation or diarrhea and also include Crohn’s/inflammatory bowel disorder. SIBO, for short, is a very common condition that may lead to food sensitivities, allergies and autoimmune conditions. Hypothyroidism, Psoriasis, Eczema, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and various rheumatological/arthritis issues have all been linked to SIBO and specific bacterial infections leading to these conditions.

RESPONSE: God, not separation, is key

Ulyess Black in his article published Nov. 29 attempts to explain why the Islam pursuit of world denomination should be dismissed because of the concept of separation of church and state, misses the mark. The ongoing threat of Mohammedanism which began some 1,400 years ago and was bravely confronted during the Crusades, can only be defeated through a return to acknowledgment of the Kingship of Christ, through His Mystical Bride, the Roman Catholic Church. This does not mean that those not accepting this fact be persecuted by governments that accept it, it means that its citizens abide to laws springing from the eternal law giver, God.

Refresh your face

Many people flock to spas to receive facial treatments for a purely cathartic experience. Medical grade facials (or what we call “clinical facials”) can provide the same relaxing experience with a more beneficial treatment, resulting in smoother, healthier skin. This is because clinical facials approach skin care from a health/medical perspective. Clinical facials can only be performed in medical offices, or med-spas where there is an overseeing physician called a medical director. Because these facilities have a medical director, they get access to medical-grade products, which typically have more potent ingredients and are better at treating common skin issues.
