BOISE — After 11 hours on what Lake City girls basketball coach Bryan Kelly called “gnarly” roads, the Timberwolves finally played a basketball game at Borah High.

And played quite well.

Whitney Meier scored 11 points and Kate Maryon had seven steals, leading the Timberwolves past the Borah Lions 41-28 in the opening game of the TimberLion tournament on Thursday.

“It was a pretty crazy ride down here, but we got off the bus and played,” Kelly said. “I thought the girls came out and responded well and played well. I thought our guards did a good job of pressuring them on defense and getting some steals. They kind of packed it in with a 1-3-1 zone on us, but Whitney hit some shots.”

Lauren Rewers had nine points and seven rebounds, and Ciera Dvorak had four points and five assists for Lake City (6-0), which faces Rocky Mountain of Meridian today at Borah High in Boise.

Alyssa Bolt scored eight points for Borah.

TACOMA, Wash. — After a lengthly bus ride of 9 1/2 hours from Post Falls to Tacoma, and some more chaos on the way to the gym, the Trojans came alive in the second half, beating the Tigers in the opening round of the Curtis High tournament.

“It took us 9 1/2 hours to get from home to our hotel in Tacoma,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We saw a lot of bad driving on the freeway, but didn’t have to stop and chain up like everyone else did on Snoqualmie Pass.”

As for the game, Post Falls senior Max McCullough scored 37 points, Zach Hillman had four assists and eight points and Blake McLean had four offensive rebounds for Post Falls (5-1), which faces tournament host Curtis tonight at 8:30 in the semifinals.

“Max was consistent all the way through tonight,” coach McLean said. “Tonight, Max just didn’t want us to lose and carried us offensively. Zach did a good job defensively, and I was very pleased with David Bourgard off the bench. All 11 guys contributed, but I was proud of David’s effort and determination. The game was a good test for us. Weather and being stuck in traffic, we struggled in the first half, but our defensive intensity really took over.”

Once the team reached Tacoma for its pregame meal, apparently the wait staff forgot some of the players’ orders, delaying their trip to the gym.
