COEUR d’ALENE — Guard Jakob Lynn partially blocked a potential game-winning shot at the baseline, sealing Coeur d’Alene’s 45-44 victory over Shadle Park on Thursday night in the Vikings’ season opener at Elmer Jordan Court.

“One of their big guys got a shot off at the end at the baseline, but one of our guys got a hand on the ball,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kurt Lundblad said. “Their guy had to take an unorthodox shot. We gave them some opportunities to win at the end.”

Sam Matheson scored 15 points for Coeur d’Alene. Will McElver added 10 points and eight rebounds, Joey Naccarato scored 10 points, and Brody Lundblad had three assists and four steals.

“It was early in the season for both teams,” Lundblad said. “The execution wasn’t always there. We didn’t finish well. We didn’t make some free throws. But we’re proud of the kids’ efforts.”

Skinner shines for

Vikings in opener

BOISE — Isaiah Skinner (170 pounds) won his matches by pin for the Vikings in duals against the Lions and Patriots at Borah High.

Coeur d’Alene lost 45-29 to Borah, then fell 60-24 to Centennial.

Dylan Lockwood (138) and Nate Jensen (285) also picked up a pair of wins for Coeur d’Alene, which competes in the Buck’s Bags tournament today starting at 3 p.m. at Capital High in Boise.

“We’ve had some adversity with some injuries and guys out of the lineup,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We had mixed feelings about even making the trip with some guys with injuries and others that can’t wrestle until Saturday because of athletic code violations. It’s hard to win with rookies in the lineup, but we had our chances against Borah. The guys wrestled hard and we’re just trying to get through this stretch. Some of our younger guys, it served a purpose to get used to the varsity level and our older guys got some matches against southern kids. Everyone wants to win, but we’ll take what we can get. In a month or two, we’ll be ready to go.”
