CROSS COUNTRY

Locals qualify for nationals: A record 17 local youth cross-country runners have qualified for the Junior Olympic Nationals.

The North Idaho XC team qualified 17 runners ages 9-15 for the USA Track & Field Junior Olympic National Championship to be held on Dec. 12, in Albuquerque, N.M. The team is comprised of 20 elite cross-country runners from Coeur d’Alene, Hayden, Post Falls, Sandpoint and Liberty Lake.

Founded 11 years ago by Mark Curtis, North Idaho XC has qualified runners every year for the national championship and has produced five three-time All Americans and one four-time All-American, an honor bestowed upon the top 25 finishers in each two-year age category.

All-Americans currently running on the team include Coeur d’Alene residents Lauren Forster and brothers Sam and Max Anderson.

At the Junior Olympic races, the runners compete against the best youth runners in America at 2K, 3K, 4K and 5K distances depending upon age. The team, now coached by Erin Hart of Liberty Lake, holds preseason training in August followed by a four-day-a-week training schedule from mid-October through mid-December.

Top youth runners in the area are encouraged to try out for the 2016 team and contact the coach at ely376@hotmail.com with questions.

Additionally, the team seeks donations to offset the travel expenses to New Mexico for this year’s national qualifiers.

BASEBALL

Clinic nears: The Dome in Hayden is hosting “Big League Training,” a camp set for Dec. 19 at The Dome, 167 Miles Ave.

Ages 6-9 will meet from 9 to 11 a.m.; ages 10-13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and ages 14-18 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Cost is $35 per player.

The instructional staff includes four local players, three with professional baseball experience — Kyle Johnson, Alex Capaul and Drew Turbin.

SWIMMING

Fall Splash meet: Hosted at the Kroc Center the Coeur d’Alene Area Swim Team (CAST) had 116 of its swimmers compete at the Fall Splash.

Leading the charge for CAST were Haley Pierce (13), Micah Sharples (13), and Erin Griffin (8), who each posted multiple first-place finishes, and Chang He (16), Jon Archer (15) and Karter Rasmussen (14), whom also posted multiple first-place finishes.
