NIC WRESTLING: Strong start, tough finish for Cardinal wrestlers

| December 13, 2015 8:00 PM

COEUR d’ALENE — What started out as a strong afternoon for the 11th-ranked North Idaho College wrestling team quickly took a turn to the other direction later on Saturday at Christianson Gym.

NIC, with wins in the first five of the first seven matches, beat Southwestern Oregon 24-18 before losing 43-10 to fourth-ranked Clackamas later on.

“We picked up a pretty good win against Southwestern, but then took a pretty good beating against Clackamas,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “It’s a good time for a break and we’ll look to push on after we get back.”

Dajour Reece, the national runner-up at 165 pounds, beat Lucius Van Rensburg of Southwestern Oregon, but suffered a dislocated rib during the match and didn’t wrestle against Clackamas.

Chase Campbell, the former Lakeland High standout at 184, suffered a dislocated elbow 1:14 into his match against Haszel White of Clackamas.

“We’ve got to gear up and push on,” Whitcomb said. “Give Clackamas credit. They’re a pretty good team.”

NIC returns to action on Jan. 16 against Great Falls at Sentinel High in Missoula.
