Avista donates to area nonprofits

| December 22, 2015 8:00 PM

Avista Corp. and the Avista Foundation on Monday announced seasonal donations to several North Idaho nonprofits and programs.

The Press Christmas for All received $3,500 and food banks in Post Falls, Rathdrum, Hayden and Spirit Lake each received $400.

Through their buying power and relationships with food producers, the food banks are able to leverage donations such as Avista's to bring several times their value to help stock the shelves for those in need.

In addition, $225,000 was given toward Project Share, which provides one-time emergency energy assistance to families in need without regard to their heating source. The funds are distributed through local community action partners in the three states Avista serves.

The total seasonal amount awarded by Avista was $505,000.

The total value of Avista's grants and donations for 2015 is more than $2.7 million from both corporate and foundation sources.

"At this time of year, the needs are greatest for food, heat and a way for some families to celebrate the holidays," said Scott Morris, chairman, president and CEO of Avista Corp.

"This year, in particular, with the windstorm that caused so much destruction and inconvenience, it's important that we step up to provide assistance to those community organizations that help individuals and families most in need."

Funds for Avista Corp. donations come from company profits. They are not included as a cost to customers in developing rates.
