PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Follini helps Cd'A Charter notch first win of season

COEUR d’ALENE — Center Charles Follini dominated inside the paint, scoring nine points and grabbing 15 rebounds with five steals, to help Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy beat Lakeside 46-32 on Saturday at Holy Family Catholic School to earn its first win of the season.

Jeffrey Kersh scored 16 points for Charter in the nonleague contest.

“We played a very scrappy team that fought hard,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Jarrod Womack said. “But we found our stride and managed to put some points on the board.”

Lakeside’s AJ Bighead scored nine points for the Knights (1-7).

Cd’A Charter (1-4) hosts Grangeville on Jan. 2. Lakeside hosts Genesis Prep on Jan. 5.

COEUR d’ALENE — Brody Lundblad had 20 points and seven assists, leading the Vikings past the Braves in a nonleague game at Elmer Jordan Court.

Joey Naccarato had 19 points and nine rebounds for Coeur d’Alene (5-1), which opened a 39-27 halftime lead, outscoring Flathead of Kalispell 25-12 in the second quarter.

“Flathead’s a good team and pressure you into trying to get out of our comfort zone,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Kurt Lundblad, who celebrated his 50th birthday on Saturday. “We pushed the ball around and got some transition baskets. We hung in their in the first quarter. When we made a run, our energy was over the top, especially Joey and Bryce (Bronson). Both of them did a good job of picking everyone up and playing at a level we’ll need to in order to be successful. We were unselfish with the ball, and we’re fun to watch when we’re unselfish. I loved seeing that tonight with our intensity.”

Bronson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for Coeur d’Alene, which competes in the Centennial Holiday tournament on Jan. 31 at the College of Idaho in Caldwell.

Matthew Marshall scored 17 points for Flathead.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — A potential game-tying shot at the buzzer at the end of regulation beyond the 3-point line bounced off the front of the rim, and the the Trojans came up just short at the Curtis Winter Classic near Tacoma.

Post Falls finished fourth in the tournament, going 1-2, including a close one against the team from Vancouver, Wash.

“They came out early and their size affected us a little bit,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “They’re a very big, physical team. It took us a while to adjust to their size. I thought our guys battled, we responded well. We came up a little bit short. This tournament exposed the things we need to work on, but it also showed us what we’ve been doing right. We will use this tournament as a springboard to get better.”

Max McCullough and Zach Hillman each scored 13 points for the Trojans (5-3).

Post Falls returns to action at the Lake City tournament on Dec. 28.

SPOKANE — Davan Norris hit 4 of 4 free throws and drained two 3-pointers, but the Bulldogs struggled to find offense in a loss to West Valley in nonleague play.

Paul Sundquist added eight points for the Bulldogs (2-5), who shot just 27 percent from the field against a strong West Valley (5-2) squad. Trailing by eight at halftime, an 18-4 third quarter proved costly for the Bulldogs.

Sandpoint is at the Lake City tournament on Dec. 28.

HARRISON FLATS — Freshman guard Gage Maitland drilled three 3-pointers at the right time for the Warriors in a backup role, in its nonleague win over the Mustangs.

“Offensively, we probably played our best three quarters,” Kootenai coach TJ Hammond said. “Dylan Wright played well defensively. Gage Maitland came in off the bench and hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter and he sparked the offense. We went up for good. His shooting did it. Anthony Keogh’s 10 boards helped us get over the hump underneath the basket.”

Dylan Wright scored 13 points for Kootenai (3-3), which hosts Priest River on Jan. 5.
