COLVILLE — The visiting Lakeland Hawks responded to a hot start by the Colville Indians, who scored 15 points in the first five minutes of a nonleague game, to win big, 69-41 on Saturday.

“They had some shots there in the first quarter where it could be a long night,” Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. “We turned up the defense, that helped. Coach (Dave) Stockwell called a timeout halfway through the first quarter, he chewed them out a little bit. The kids responded to that really well.”

Lakeland (2-2) embarked on a 13-0 second quarter run which helped the Hawks take a 28-27 halftime lead.

Andrew Knight finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Forest Zubaly added another 14 points.

Alberto Cisneros of Colville scored seven points in the first quarter, but Lakeland held him scoreless until the fourth quarter. He finished with 13.

SANDPOINT — The defense is there, but the offense is still finding its rhythm, as the Bulldogs lost a defensive slugfest to the Knights in nonleague action at Les Rogers Court.

Sophomore Robbie Johnson scored a game-high 13 points to go with five boards and two assists for the Bulldogs (1-4), who are still trying to recover from missing nearly 10 practices to start the season. Sandpoint was held to single digits for the first three quarters, but still managed to keep the game close until a pivotal third quarter, when they were outscored 14-5 by the Knights (2-4).

“Defensively, I’m really proud of our guys. We just had three mental lapses to start the second half,” said Bulldogs head coach Kent Leiss, who said the biggest problem is a lack of conditioning. “We’re behind; waiting for the football team to get here has slowed us down. We’ll get there, we just need to improve our conditioning and offensive execution.”

Carlos Collado added six points and six boards, and Davan Norris five and five in defeat.
