PREP WRESTLING: Randles, Walker nab Inland Empire titles

| December 13, 2015 8:00 PM

• INLAND EMPIRE CLASSIC

SPOKANE VALLEY — Casey Randles won the 182-pound title to lead Sandpoint to a fifth-place finish at the Inland Empire Classic on Saturday at Central Valley High.

Jared Walker of Lakeland, wrestling up a weight, won the 195-pound title for the Hawks, who finished ninth.

“He was giving up a lot of weight,” said Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute, who hopes Walker can wrestle at 182 next week at Tri-State. “He just wrestled real solid, and pretty much dominated the weight class.”

Coeur d’Alene was seventh, which pleased coach Jeff Moffat.

“It was pretty successful,” Moffat said. “We were missing two weight groups out of our lineup. Dylan Lockwood lost to someone from Moses Lake (which won the tournament), it was his first this season. Alex Marshall, he got second place at 220 pounds, he’s a first-year wrestler. Overall, I think we wrestled well this weekend. We’ve had a lot of wrestling during the last few weeks. We’re making good strides. Seventh place out of 20 teams is a good finish, it was not bad at all.”

Alex Marshall (220) and Lockwood (138) were both second for Coeur d’Alene. Kaleb Maciosek (113), as did Mario Peregrina (145). Vince Rey (182) finished fourth and Chase Baca (132) was sixth.

Larry Johnson of Lakeland was second at 132. Will Edelblute (106) was third, Tavis Woempner (113) fourth, Tyler Siegford (138) sixth.

Tyler Presser of Sandpoint finished fourth at 170. Hyrum Hunsaker (145), Mahonri Hunsaker (152) and Elijah Guthrie (160) of Sandpoint each finished fifth, and Scout Nash (126) was sixth.

Trojans improve to 8-0

in duals at Hermiston

HERMISTON, Ore. — Post Falls went to the wire twice in dual meet action on Saturday, beating Hermiston 31-30 and Caldwell 32-30.

In a last-second victory over Hermiston, Ridge Lovett won at 106 pounds by recording a pin over Daylon Eng at 42 seconds to win the match.

“We needed two pins at the end of the dual,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “We were down by 11 points and we got two pins. We needed a pin to get a win. Our freshman got a pin. It was great, it was awesome.”

That followed another must-have pin by heavyweight Kameron Welker, who got his key result with one second left in overtime.

“It was really crazy,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “It didn’t look like he’d get a pin.”

In the win over Caldwell the Trojans again came from behind to claim victory.

“They were beating us 30-24 and it also came down to the last couple of matches,” Reardon said. “We ended at 113 and bumped Ridge Lovett up to that weight class. It was a close battle. We got a forfeit at 106 to tie it. We knew they were going to be tough. We had our backs against the wall. The bottom line is our kids found a way to win it.”

Post Falls also downed Deer Park, 49-21.

• WEST VALLEY DUALS

SPOKANE — Lake City finished fourth, with Nate Lambert at 152 and Griffin Schoch at 160 each finishing 4-1.

“I’d say we showed our experience level,” Lake City wrestling coach Corey Owen said. “We only have three starters back from last year’s team. We lost a lot of close matches. We lost some where we were pinned. We wrestled hard.”

Lake City beat Lakeside, 39-37, topped Medical Lake, 69-12, then lost 52-13 to Shadle Park. It was second in its pod, reaching the semifinals. There the Timberwolves lost 39-35 to Freeman (Wash.), then lost to Mead in the third-place match, 48-33.

Lake City wrestles Kellogg and Lakeland on Wednesday at Coeur d’Alene.
