TACOMA — Aushanti Potts scored 30 points as the Curtis Vikings beat the Post Falls Trojans 77-66 in the semifinals of the Curtis Winter Classic on Friday night.

“He can score in a variety of ways,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said of Potts. “He’s a special player. He’s the real deal, but we made him work hard for everything he got.”

Max McCullough, who scored 37 points on Thursday night, scored 20 for Post Falls (5-2).

“Curtis is a very athletic, physical team,” McLean said. “They like to press and pressure, but I was impressed with how we were able to handle it. They’re one of the top-ranked teams in the state (of Washington) and I thought our kids answered the bell. Our kids never backed down in a tough environment, with a big crowd. We dealt with some adversity, but I thought we held our composure in a difficult situation and our maturity shined through.”

Jake Pfennigs had 15 points and eight rebounds, Jayden Gering seven rebounds and Zach Hillman five steals and 11 points for Post Falls, which faces Prairie High of Vancouver, Wash., today at 5:30 p.m. in the third-place game.

PULLMAN — One quarter where the Hawks struggled made all the difference, in a nonleague loss to the Greyhounds.

Lakeland was blitzed during a 19-2 second-quarter run by Pullman, with Jacob Miles scoring a game-high 20 points.

“They did well,” Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. “Miles had three of his six 3-pointers in the second quarter, five in the first half. It was mostly just the second quarter, all we had were a couple of free throws. They played good defense and just clamped down on us.”

Dylan Knight had five assists and four steals for Lakeland (2-4), which hosts Cheney on Monday.

Timberlake played without point guard Thomas Hauck (broken collarbone) and guards Ty George (foot) and Brayden Menti (ankle).

“We played a hard game (Thursday) night at St. Maries,” Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said. “We were not ready to play, and Lakeside knocked down quite a few shots in the first half. We switched up defenses at halftime, and put more pressure on them.”

Tyrell Ambro had 13 rebounds and three blocks and Bryar Sanchez had 13 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists for Lakeside, which plays Coeur d’Alene Charter today at Holy Family Catholic School.

“We came out and played a really good game in the first half,” Lakeside coach Butch Nomee said. “In the second half, we came out flat and lacked intensity and ended up with a bunch of turnovers. We just ran out of gas and got tired. Timberlake’s a good team, and their size got us in the fourth quarter. The effort we showed was really good and for them to continue battlng was promising.”

Timberlake returns to action on Jan. 8, hosting Bonners Ferry in its Intermountain League opener.

Our passing created some open looks. We had 18 turnovers and started playing too fast, and we’ll need to tighten that up. But overall, a overall and energy in the game was one of our best of the year.”
