NIC WRESTLING: Late escape helps Cards edge Trappers

| December 12, 2015 8:30 PM

COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Alex Aguilar used an escape with eight seconds remaining in his match at 157 pounds, helping the North Idaho College wrestling team, ranked 11th in the NJCAA preseason poll, beat 20th-ranked Northwest (Wyo.) College 30-16 in the Battle for the Moose dual on Friday night at Christianson Gym.

“We needed to get some momentum and Alex just kept wrestling hard,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “We’re pretty evenly matched right now, and it’s good to get a win and move on to today.”

The second dual in the Battle for the Moose will be held as part of the Apodaca Duals on Jan. 30 at Powell, Wyo. The Trappers will need to beat the Cardinals by at least 14 points to take possession of the Moose.

NIC (3-2) will host Southwestern Oregon today at noon, followed by a dual against fourth-ranked Clackamas at 2 p.m.

Garrett White (125 pounds) and Dajour Reece (165) won by pinfall for NIC.
