COEUR d’ALENE — On Wednesday, it was for third place in the second annual Coeur d’Alene High girls Winter Classic at Elmer Jordan Court.

With only the host school changing next Tuesday, it will mean a little more between the Lake City Timberwolves and Coeur d’Alene Vikings.

On that night, Lake City will open league play. Wednesday, they beat the Vikings 58-41 to finish third in the tournament for the second straight year.

Lake City 58, Coeur d’Alene 41: Lauren Rewers scored 14 points, Keara Simpson had 11 points and eight rebounds and Cierra Dvorak had nine points and four steals for Lake City (10-2), which travels to Eastmont High of Wenatchee on Friday.

“We just came out and tried to work on some things that we think we need to get better at,” Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. “Need to prepare for league, and it’s tough to turn around and play them again on Tuesday, but we tried not to do too much. Played a good first half, but we can’t foul that much. When we play Coeur d’Alene, we get a little amped up and play a little harder and get ourselves into some foul trouble. Need to do a better job of not doing that.

Lake City led Coeur d’Alene 33-16 at halftime. Tuesday will mark the 5A Inland Empire League opener, hosting Coeur d’Alene.

“It’s good for us to get up and down,” Kelly said. “Our season starts on Tuesday. These games are preparing us to get better and prepare for what we need to do.”

Lake City finished the tournament 2-1.

“It’s great to play as many games as we can heading into league and regional play,” Kelly said. “Playing these teams like Lake Stevens and Bothell, it’s going to help us in the long run.”

Emily Callahan scored 13 points, Kayla Fagan had 12 points and Jordyn Bojorquez had seven points for Coeur d’Alene (5-6), which is off until Tuesday’s game.

“We’ve got to do what we did in the second half the entire game to give ourselves a chance,” Coeur d’Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. “We only took 28 shots for the game, and we’ve got to work on not being afraid to put some shots up.”

Lake City also beat Coeur d’Alene in the third place game last season.

“Second year in a row we wrap the tournament and face them here and again the following week,” Poffenroth said. “I don’t know what else you can do, but the games (Tuesday) were all really good. Play your nonleague games to get better. We’ve just got to get over the hump. Hopefully by the end of the season we’ll be able to do that and get some of these games.”
