Walleye aren't bad fish, just wrong for Idaho
Fish and Game provides them in three reservoirs, but they keep showing up elsewhere
Idaho and walleye just aren’t a good match in most places, and here’s why. Walleye are native to large Midwestern lakes that tend to have large and prolific forage bases of minnows, shiners, chubs and other small baitfish. Those baitfish are not available in most Idaho waters, so walleye are likely to eat other game fish that are highly valued by Idaho anglers. Eventually, those other fish species could be gone, or greatly diminished, and the end result could be a bunch of unhealthy, unsustainable walleye populations.

OPINION: U.S. and Idaho Constitutions protect the rights of voters, not political parties
The Constitution of the United States makes it clear that all government power is based on the will of “We the People.” The right of citizens to vote for governing officials is spelled out in several amendments to that revered document. The Constitution does not grant any rights to political parties because the Founding Fathers had witnessed the havoc they had wrought in Europe and thought they’d do likewise in America.

OPINION: Senate Pro Tem Chuck Winder has had his fill of incivility in the ranks
Senator Chuck Winder, the leader of Idaho’s Senate, is a good and patient man. I often disagree with him on issues coming before the Senate, but I don’t question his ethics, temperament and dedication to serving the public. He has watched a decline in civility in the ranks of the Senate and recently took action to bring some of the instigators up short. He deserves the support of fellow Senators and of the wider public. Legislative business suffers when there is continual internal sniping among the members.

OPINION: Protect and defend the right to vote
Voting is one of the few times in American society where we are all equal. Each of us has one vote to cast - no matter our race, gender, neighborhood, profession, or wealth. Votes are cast by Idahoans in communities throughout the State. They are also cast by Idahoans serving in the military who are living across the country and throughout the world. All of these voters deserve to have their votes count.

“Noise” so pervades modern life that it’s become inescapable. We hardly know what it’s like anymore without a cacophony of noise, chatter, and moving images — often competing with one another. It required years of painstaking work, the project was fueled by passion and it taught him valuable lessons. Today, Solesbee still has the Mustang, and has won numerous trophies for it at car shows. At the recent 2023 SEMA Show, he brought home a whole new kind of trophy – the Body Shop Business Single Shop Executive of the Year award.

OPINION: Republican brand
If you want the truth about what’s happening in the Republican Party you won’t get it from the Democrats or their allies in the media. They want you to believe a myth that the party is trying to disenfranchise voters and prevent candidates from running for office. Of course this is exactly what you would expect to hear from the opposition and those that have lost power due to a surge in grassroots engagement.

ADVERTISING: Advertorial — Help for Guillain-Barre′ Syndrome: Acupuncture
Guillain-Barre′ Syndrome (GBS) is a neurological disorder that is somewhat rare, affecting about 1-2 people per 100,000 in the U.S. annually. It can occur at any age, any gender and any ethnicity. It is one of those diseases that we understand very little about, but all seem to concur that it is an autoimmune disorder affecting the peripheral nerves (nerves at the ends of fingers and toes), that gradually weaken the muscles and move inward towards the organs of the body. GBS can become very serious, very quickly, so prompt medical attention is crucial.

ADVERTISING: Advertorial — New approach to the prevalence of back pain
If you are like most people, you have friends or family members that suffer with some form of back pain. The World Health Organization reports that low back pain is the number one cause of disability around the globe. Approximately one in five Americans suffer with some type of chronic pain according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. We are beginning to see that back pain is a very common medical condition, with 80% of adults experiencing it during their lifetime and back pain is the third most common reason for doctor visits. With such an increase in the number of adults having back pain, what is this costing the average family in medical expenses, lost wages, and much more. The most recent estimate is that $86 billion is spent annually on back pain alone in the U.S. and it is costing employers 186.7 million days of work lost per year that results in lost productivity, increased insurance and worker's compensation costs. The most common reason reported for missed work is back pain and the direct cost for missed days is estimated to be around $20 billion.

Does your estate plan need an Idaho-specific revision?
Wills, trusts, advanced medical directives, and power of attorney documents of those who have moved to Idaho from other states should be reviewed with an eye toward Idaho law. People regularly move to Idaho from other states and bring with them estate planning documents created in their prior state of residence. Such people often ask me if their old estate planning documents are enforceable in Idaho. Generally, those documents are still valid in Idaho. However, there are some very important reasons to have estate planning documents from another state reviewed by an Idaho estate planning attorney. Let’s remind ourselves what each of these documents are and then consider some of the issues that create concern about out-of-state wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents.

I never went that path, my career took me a different way but I have a great appreciation and I just want to say thank you to you veterans out there that allow the rest of us to do what we want to do and have the freedom to do it."

The joy of working
There was once a high school teacher who supplemented his income by writing short stories. He liked to teach, but he loved to write. He later wrote the first few pages of a story about a teenager with psychic powers and threw it in the trash. But his wife retrieved it and encouraged him to finish it. The teacher was Stephen King, and the story became his first published novel, "Carrie."

Do you know when certain real estate should not be titled to your family’s living trust?
One of the most important parts of having a living trust designed to avoid probate is to have those assets which would normally require probate assigned to the trust. By this I mean that the trust needs to be the owner of the probate-causing assets (more technically, the Trustee of the trust is the owner, but in his or her capacity as Trustee). In Idaho, one asset that will almost always implicate the need for a probate after death is real estate. So, when I help clients establish a living trust for estate planning, I also assist them in getting their real estate retitled into their trust. This typically means preparing, executing, and recording a new deed for the client’s personal residence which names the trust as the titled owner of the property going forward (again, technically, the deed shows the Trustee of the trust as the titled owner, but in their capacity as Trustee of said trust). If a client owns more than one residence, we will be repeating this process for each.

Don’t feel badly if you do not realize that Nov. 14 is World Diabetes Day, or that November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. OPINION: What can individual Idahoans do to honor America’s veterans?
Americans can commemorate Veterans Day twice this year. The official observance is Nov. 11. It dates back to the armistice ending World War I, which went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. It was originally called Armistice Day, but renamed Veterans Day in 1954. Nov. 11 falls on Saturday this year, so the state and federal holiday is observed on Friday, Nov. 10.

OPINION: Death of the primary
The Democrats running Reclaim Idaho and their supporters are pushing a voter initiative which they are deceptively calling the “Open Primary Initiative” and falsely claiming that “Leaders are handpicked by political party committees” and that somehow Idahoans do not have the freedom to vote in all elections. Winter snowbirds have unique estate planning considerations
Many of our clients in North Idaho are “snowbirds” who spend winters somewhere warm. Often this means a person owns assets in more than one state. If this is true for you, then you need to pay special attention to certain decisions in your estate planning documents such as Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, and Advanced Medical Directives. If you are headed somewhere warm to spend the winter months, you will want to be sure you have everything in order before you go. So, now is the opportune moment to tidy things up, not the week before you leave town.

Quote from Final Battle by David Horowitz: “Is America already an empty shell of its greater self, and are its days already numbered? Only a fool would say, with any certainty, no. Barbarian terrorist forces are already at the gates, and inside them, American leaders both military and civilian — are preoccupied with delusional threats that are said to be existential — climate change, white supremacy, patriotic extremism. But the greatest existential threat to American democracy is the drive by the Democrat Party to create a one-party socialist state — a fascist state. This is manifest in their assault on the First Amendment through so- called “cancel culture” and their collusion in the deplatforming of a president of the United States and his 74 million supporters.

ADVERTISING: Advertorial — How to manage degenerative disc disease naturally
Like wrinkles and gray hair, disc degeneration is considered a normal part of aging. In fact, degenerative disc disease (DDD) is not really a specific disease, but a term used to describe the inevitable and progressive changes our spinal discs encounter as we age. Research shows that one third of people aged 40 to 49 years old have image-based evidence of moderate to severe DDD, and the prevalence increases two to four-fold in those aged 60 and older.

The people (who voted) have spoken
Since I filed this column several hours before the polls closed yesterday, no Wednesday morning election quarterbacking will be included. I’m hoping that humility, grace and respect will accompany all of the newly-elected and re-elected when they take the oath of office in January 2024. God bless America.
