Trump presidency still seeking shape, form, discipline
After a month in the Oval Office, it is clear Donald Trump’s presidency is like Winston Churchill’s regrettable pudding: it lacks a theme. Things may change, of course, but thus far the Trump White House is one best described as a swamp of chaos, contradiction and disarray, driven by a scattershot approach to foreign and domestic policy, one conspicuous for its leaks reflecting the rivalries for power that Shakespeare would have appreciated.

My view from the street
The 2016 election has divided families, friends, and country into hostile camps of warring zealous devotees and opposition unbelievers. We shout and brandish fists across a deepening, widening chasm. We become “unpatriotic," and “un-American," because of political disagreements.

Of milkweed and monarchs
Few species spark people’s wonder and passion like the monarch butterfly. With its fiery-orange and black pattern and large wingspan, the monarch is among the most recognized of insects in North America. Its life cycle is a complex marvel involving a lengthy migration completed “relay-style” by several generations in a single year. During their summer wanderings, female monarchs lay their eggs on the leaves of milkweeds — the sole food source for their striking yellow, white, and black-striped caterpillars. Milkweeds are the essential links of the chain that connect monarch breeding populations across North America.

LIBERALS: When snowflakes melt
I had to laugh as I read Shawn Keenan’s rather angry letter in defense of her “liberalism.” I think her letter is rather revealing. Shawn rants in all caps about how she believes in human rights, how she’s “tough and tender,” and loves to serve others. She’s proud of her “unconditional love” presumably for her fellow man. And she speaks to nothing being more “courageous than compassion,” and describes her belief in “equity, empathy, goodness and love” and rejects the term “liberal snowflake.”

But I am asking all to possibly give a few dollars to the Alpine Animal Hospital on Best Avenue. Someone paid for this care. Was it the party that brought in the cat after finding it? Was it the hospital that attempted to save this cat? I think all of us who own and have loved pets can chip in a few dollars to cover this cost. This was very upsetting to all of us. I just ask that we chip in and help cover costs expended to help the one who covered the cost and make it good. Thank you for allowing me to ask this.

Health care and customer service
Recently a dear friend of mine, who has cancer and Lymphedema issues asked me to speak with another health care provider who works for a large hospital system in California, regarding her care plan. For approximately 30 minutes I navigated message machines, two people who tried to be helpful and then finally I found myself having to leave a long message on an answering machine at a Lymphedema center. All that and I never even spoke to anyone personally in that center. Now a whole week later no one has even called me back.
Having a licensed nurse on staff saves lives!
Independent and assisted living communities exist to promote a safe and vibrant environment for residents. Having a nurse on staff can save lives. Licensed nurses are trained professionals that know first-hand the importance of resident care and can assure the timely identification of acute clinical problems. Licensed nurses can optimally monitor, assess and intervene when physical and behavioral changes occur and quickly streamline medical emergencies.

RECESS: Guys, where are you?
This week is Congressional recess or as the Congress in Washington calls it, District Work Period. This period runs from Feb. 18-23 and is the time senators and representatives should be in their home states and districts to meet with their constituents. So I’m asking when Sen. Crapo, Sen. Risch and Rep. Labrador will be holding town meetings with us here in Coeur d’Alene and North Idaho this week? This is part of their job descriptions and their obligation to their constituents. Looking forward to meeting them!
The lofty liver
Our liver is one of the most amazing organs. When you look at it, a blob of smooth, consistent, dense material, you just can’t conceive how it can do as much as it does! Science is now saying that the liver is probably directly or immediately indirectly related to every metabolic function in the body. I find that to be simply amazing! So let’s look at this vital organ.
Greatness among us
Over the last several years we have concentrated our wine and now beer dinners at Fleur de Sel in Post Falls. There are many wonderful restaurants in the area and we have worked with several of them on these events, they’ve all done a great job. Fleur de Sel though with their husband and wife ownership team of Laurent and Patricia Zirotti not only understand our goals and passions for these events they also execute so seamlessly that it makes these events what they should be…. Joyous.
SENIORS: Beware this trap
Last Thursday evening my husband and I went to a Post Falls restaurant for dinner. As we frequent this restaurant, we could not help but notice that at five or six tables there were couples age 70+ where men in business attire were trying to sell them something, and others in the background doing paperwork. We suspected this was a time share scam because this has happened to us in the past.

SCHOOLS: Deserve our support
I am a longtime resident of Coeur d’Alene and my daughter is currently attending the third grade at Dalton Elementary. I would like to show my support for the proposed levy and bond that, without raising our taxes, would assist with the much needed modernization and expansion at her school. Both the levy and the bond are equally important to the future of our communities in equal measure. The levy will provide additional funding to ensure that our schools have access to new and innovative educational programs that will enhance the educational experience of our children. The bond will provide the necessary funding to update our school facilities to match the growth of the student body and faculty, which has grown substantially, as more families move into the Coeur d’Alene School District.

Headache treatment from a dentist?
Do you have chronic headaches or migraines? Consider that dentists generally are more knowledgeable concerning the forces of the head and neck muscles. They are also generally more knowledgeable about how these forces relate to the nerves in the jaw, face, TMJ and teeth than other health care providers. These are forces that dentists thoroughly study in dental school and see every day in their dental practices. But recently, dentists have begun to become aware of the link between these dental forces and the symptoms of headaches, migraines, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems experienced by patients.

I’m sitting here reading the paper and cannot stop the tears running down my face. I cannot believe we have individual(s) who live in our community that are this cruel. That cat did nothing to deserve this. Animals give us unconditional love and don’t judge. I hope whoever is responsible for this is caught and punished to the full extent of the law and then put on a busy intersection with a sign stating what they did! I guess we do have people in our beautiful community who are just pure evil.

At Lake City, the need for this was in the science department, and I am currently in a biology class that only has 15 students. In a class this size, students are able to participate more. During class discussions everyone is able to talk and ask questions of the teacher to make sure they understand the material. Also, with a class this size we are able to cover the basic material quicker which leaves time to go more in depth about the topics we are learning and interested in.

BEYONCE: Beyond bad taste
I don’t usually watch the Grammy Awards show, because it has relegated itself to unclothed women. I find that the country music awards show has a little more class. However, with that being said, my husband turned the television on and selected the Grammy Award show. I enjoyed some of the music and suddenly Beyoncé was “front and center.” I was absolutely appalled and offended on so many levels. If I want to see a pregnant woman’s body, I will work in obstetrics. Please, a naked pregnant woman is only beautiful to her spouse; otherwise, is profoundly ugly — better clothed. What truly offended me, as a Catholic woman, was the replication of the appearance of the Virgin Mary with halos surrounding Beyoncé’s head and the heads of the other women on stage. CAT: Cruelty is shocking
I just saw the front page of the paper with a picture of a beautiful animal, covered in diesel fuel. I cannot bring myself to read the article and the sad details. I am saddened and sick that we have such cruel, cold-hearted people living in our beautiful community. Who does that? What kind of a person can be so cruel, so sick in their thoughts, so hateful? It’s shocking.

EDUCATION: Choice is good
In the recent “DeVos Confirmation Leads to Questions, Educated Guesses” article, many notable individuals voice their protest of DeVos’ approval as education secretary. What these people fail to consider is the honorable position DeVos stands for: school choice. When protesters assert that supporting private and charter schools harms children, they ignore the benefits of such high academics as well as the hazards of federalized education. It is well-known that charter and private schools produce very well educated scholars. If we want the best for our children, should we not have the choice of how they are educated, instead of allowing a corrupt system to indoctrinate them?

Tyler Wilson: 'Lego Batman' a blast for all ages
After an uneven finale to Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy and the horrendous one-two punch of last year’s “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad,” DC’s most consistent superhero performer looked to be spiraling back to cinematic purgatory (it was there once before after 1997’s rubber nipple-laden “Batman & Robin”).

FOOD: A modest proposal
I think I’ve found the perfect solution for getting more food in the food banks (see Bare Bank Blues, Feb. 4 Press). Those of us who hesitate about spending an outrageous amount for a food item and continually see the price increase every time we shop: JUST STOP BUYING. That way the big suppliers and stores will have more to give to the food banks, less it goes to waste. (Don’t forget, they write this off their taxes.)

Food neophobia is defined as a fear of trying new foods whereas picky eating is the refusal to eat new or even familiar foods.

The good and the bad
Idaho has some of the tightest state controls on liquor in the Union. The inability of a popular local restaurant to secure a full liquor license, which includes wine beer and spirits, has gotten much press and reaction from our community. Clearly the restrictions on the number of these full licenses and their ties to population count could use some updating, but there are other parts of our state liquor laws that are well thought out and protective of small business. Like most things in life there are the good parts of our laws and the bad parts, much of this judgment depends on perspective but the larger and more difficult issue is do they warrant changes and how do you get at changes that are needed while keeping the good parts intact.

GREEN: Only way to go
I read with appreciation the Weekly Weather Almanac by Mr. Harris and Mr. Mann on Feb. 6. While clearly laying out a case for the normal climatic cycles of our planet over the past few thousand years, they also clearly indicated that they believe we should “go green” whenever and wherever possible to help offset mankind’s activities on our planet. Over the years, my family has attempted to minimize our obvious negative impacts on Idaho’s incredible water, air, land and wildlife. Why? Very simply, it is in our common interest to conserve these resources, use them wisely when needed, clean up the mess we leave behind, and maintain or even enhance their exceptional quality for future generations to enjoy.

STOP: Police, do something
Having read the Sunday article “Red Means Stop,” I have to add my frustration to those of Jerry Weaver and countless others in our community regarding the blatant red-light runners.
Off to a great start
Hampered by the lowest inventory in years our local real estate market keeps moving. Lack of available homes though have slowed some areas yet price increases reflect that — at least in the lower priced homes — sellers are in the driver’s seat. We are still showing 17 percent fewer site-built homes available than at this time last year and those homes are selling 41 percent faster. Last year’s average days on market was 220 days. This year the average is 120 days, which means an already low inventory is being absorbed quickly leaving us with only about 3.7 months of available housing in some price ranges.
The necessity of vision
A railroad crew was making repairs to a section of track when a train rolled up on a parallel track. Several men in suits disembarked from one of the passenger cars and began inspecting the work that was being done. A tall man in a blue suit looked over at the crew and nodded. He began to smile and walk toward them.

TRIVIA: Gotcha, guy
I enjoy reading the Trivia Guy in the paper. I don’t agree with one of his answers in the Feb. 7 edition. He asked how many years the Susan B. Anthony dollar was minted, and gave the answer as three. It was actually minted four years: 1979, 1980,1981 and 1999.

FEAR: The political driver
Fear had a lot to do with Donald Trump’s victory. That fear is very strong in many of his supporters. Many gun owners cite the need for guns to protect themselves (from what?) and they have a second fear that people are trying to take their guns away from them. Then there is the need for “the wall” and fear of immigration in general.

Can you afford bad habits?
Are you proud of your bad habits? Surprisingly, most of us may very well be, if not proud, at least very comfortable with our most popular bad habits. For example, when it comes to eating healthy, many of us talk a good game but walk a much different path out of sight of friends and loved ones. Another poor habit commonly found is chronic procrastination when it comes to exercise and healthy habits. The fad diet industries and health care businesses benefit greatly from our lack of commitment and procrastination that is wrapped so tightly around exercise and good nutrition.

I read, with interest, the front-page story titled “Red means Stop.” Why are seemingly good people COMPLETE IDIOTS when they get behind the wheel of their car? What makes people think they are so much more important than anyone else that they will risk not only their lives, but the lives of others by running red lights, and MOST AGGRAVATING, coming south on Highway 95 crossing Appleway, with a red light for the I-90 on-ramp, and pulling into the intersection when there is no room, and blocking traffic going west on Appleway? WHY would someone INTENTIONALLY pull into that intersection and not wait prior to Appleway before the crosswalk and wait for the next green light?

A thought hit me the other day. ACA: Fair coverage wanted
I moved to Idaho about nine months ago. I read that Idaho state legislators have their health insurance paid substantially by the state. A husband and wife (state legislator) paid $200 per month for both. I owned and operated a small business for years. The health insurance for me alone was five times that amount and I am not a person with lots of preconditions. A part-time government job provides extremely inexpensive family health coverage while many of us struggle to maintain health insurance.

Courts should be wary of deference to the executive in national security

Get balanced
Do you ever feel out of balance? Do you ever wonder why so much pain and suffering happens to those we love and care for and ourselves? The body self craves balance. It will go to great lengths to signal us when it is out of balance. We will show up with migraine headaches, back pain, knee and shoulder aches and often the inability to get a good night sleep. There may be numbness and tingling in your arm or even swelling in your legs. These physical symptoms are real and it is a warning that the system lacks homeostasis. The body self is saying to you in a very loud voice, "Something needs to change, soon." I don't mean for you to quit your job or your commitments to your life, but you may need a serious overhaul and rethinking of your value system and your body self.

Finally, injectable treatments that allow for natural expression
One of the challenges I’ve faced as an injector has been the stiffness that products can create when treating nasolabial folds/smile lines. In fact, the nasolabial fold has been the very last place I will inject product because of the tendency for this treatment to blunt our smiles. I have always been conservative in these areas because it is so important for me to maintain a natural look for my patients as well as for myself.

High blood pressure is problematic. Affecting about one third of the U.S. (72 million people), it is a source of great concern. If your blood pressure is high, it means it is putting too much pressure on your artery walls, each time your heart beats. That can be a lot of strain.

LEVY: Do much more
In response to Jim Hollingsworth’s letter to the editor, levies don’t necessarily pay for teachers’ salaries. So what are you asking for? Do you want teachers to be poor like the rest of us or not get raises like the rest of us? Maybe both? So the general population doesn’t earn raises? Obviously you are upset about the taxes you have to pay to help pay for the levies. A quick search on the Coeur d’Alene School District No. 271 website gives you this breakdown:

Decoding the latest messages about allergies
Since the year 2000, physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics have been recommending that parents delay the introduction of peanuts to their children until about three years of age to reduce the risk of peanut allergies. Unfortunately, the rate of peanut allergies has only increased over the years, despite adherence to these recommendations. It’s not uncommon to see “peanut free zones” posted in public schools and child care facilities. Since reactions from a peanut allergy can be very severe, including anaphylaxis and death, it’s no wonder that parents have now become fearful to offer peanuts to their children.

LIBERALS: A civil reminder
In the Saturday Press, I read an article about how Tuevo Orjala was organizing to oppose President Trump by using Tea Party tactics just like Republicans did against President Obama. If this man can get the Left to stop screaming and yelling, setting fires, breaking windows, throwing rocks and physically assaulting supporters of the president and instead start finally acting civilly, he would be nothing less than a miracle worker!

POLITICS: Keep pastoral tax
Pastors and other religious figures have always been able to voice their political opinions from the pulpit. But unlike ordinary citizens they receive tax-free status. This is a government subsidy, plain and simple. If they want to use the pulpit for promoting any political agenda, conservative, liberal or otherwise, they are free to do it. They just have to assume some personal responsibility and cough up the subsidy. But many of these people want to have their cake and eat it too, and when they find they can’t double dip on the rest of us they cry foul. Spare me. For a group that spends so much time and hot air exhorting us to take responsibility, how many of them practice what they preach?

'Demystifying' wine and other silly wine trends
Every year there are wine trends that develop usually coming out of some large marketing group all intended to sell more wine. We get it; most all wineries at the end of the day are businesses as are all the other companies up and down the wine “food chain”. Businesses exist to make a living for employees and owners while providing service or product to their customers. Most of the time though the simpler more conventional means of doing so makes the most sense. When it comes to wine the best way to accomplish selling more wine is to make the best wine you can at a price point that represents value for your customer and is sustainable for the business. For those in the retail segment of the business it means picking great wine and providing exemplary service. No gimmicks needed!

A cure for the 'common' headache
Headaches mean big business, and this is especially the case when the cause underlying the headache pain goes undetected and therefore the headache pain is not successfully treated. Drugs are not a cure; they are not like antibiotics which actually kill bacteria that are causing the sickness. Drugs only mask the headache pain symptoms until the drug wears off, and they can cause other problems and even make the pain worse so one has to take even higher doses of drugs.
Fibromyalgia and neck pain
How can a spinal problem possibly contribute to your fibromyalgia symptoms? As with many disorders, especially pain, the nervous system is involved. The nervous system can get affected through structural changes in the spine. The classic example is the lumbar disk bulge producing a painful sciatic nerve, but there are also other ways that problems in the spine interfere with the function of nervous system.

Grocery tax still hard to swallow
Three things that make us uncomfortable:
Dehydration and its effects on your health
Dehydration occurs when your body does not have enough water to perform its normal functions. Your body loses more water and other fluids than it takes in, leading to a potentially serious medical condition. Excessive sweating, the use of diuretics, excessive alcohol use, serious diarrhea, fever and vomiting can cause dehydration.

LIGHTS: Warm is right
After reading the article on light pollution I felt I needed to add my two cents worth. I live in the Garden District and love the old houses and the soft warm glow of the lights we have now. Replacing the lights we have now with 4000k (bright white) lights would change forever the character of the neighborhood. I know LED lights are great for many reasons and I have them everywhere in my house, however, I opted for lights in the 2000-3000k range (warm white). They are a little more expensive but well worth it. I have a street light near my house and would hate to see my house bathed in harsh white light all night.
OFFICER: Only one solution
Let me get this straight. Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson’s office “made it a point to make sure the sentence was appropriate” in the DUI case against Post Falls Police Officer Knight and that she didn’t receive a perceived preferential or overly harsh sentence because she is an officer.

MARCH: What women want
Mr. Quinn belittled the Women’s Marches around the nation and the WORLD, as a liberal women’s protest. Labeling “liberal” as a four-letter word is not fair or accurate. The roots of the word liberalis or “suitable for a free man” do not apply to females since earliest origins of the word, being neither free nor a man.
Team work = Healing

Ask your audiologist Beware of the 'trade in' gimmicks!
I would hope that the intelligent consumers in North Idaho would not fall for these common practices. I recommend that any hearing impaired person keep a working pair or spare hearing aid. Anything can happen at any time. If one loses a hearing aid they would need a spare until a new one was ordered. If one damages a hearing aid (I have had a rash of dogs eating my patients hearing aids lately) you would have your spare to rely on until your aid was replaced. Please keep your aids where your dogs can't get a hold of them.

Need a plumber for your digestive challenges?
My first Thanksgiving as a 19-year-old newlywed, was a disaster. Not understanding about plumbing, I peeled 10 pounds of potatoes into the sink and then attempted to grind it down the garbage disposal. Well, I’m sure you’re all snickering at my naivety, but as you guessed, it got stopped up. Nothing I did would unplug it, try as I and other guests may, to get it moving. Dishes were brought to the neighbor’s house to wash, while others that stayed behind had hardened on food that was difficult to remove. I had to hire a plumber to come resolve the sink mess. This debacle is not unlike what we do to our own garbage disposal — our digestive system.
