Mullan 15
CLARK FORK — Consider Clark Fork’s drubbing of Mullan in the 1A Division II District 1 girls basketball tournament opener a good dress rehearsal for tougher things ahead, as the Wampus Cats coasted to a 57-15 win over the Tigers Monday night at Clark Fork High School.
Brooke Stevens tallied 15 points, seven rebounds, eight steals and five assists to lead the Wampus Cats (3-13), who broke the game open with a 30-4 run in the second and third quarters. Tessa Sutton added 15 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks, as the pair of sophomores set the tone.
Freshman Ellie Kiebert pulled down 10 rebounds, while Nona Young pulled down eight. Young, Lia Crumpton and Sarah Holderman were each honored on Senior Night, which was supposed to be against Genesis Prep before that game was canceled.
Taylor Davis scored 10 points to lead the young and short-handed Tigers (0-14), who showed some grit by opting to travel and play the game on a day when school was canceled due to snow. They deserve credit for battling to the end of a tough season.
The Cats’ win sets up a showdown against No. 1 seed Lakeside tonight at 6:30 at Lakeland High to keep their season alive. The Cats lost to the Knights by 14 points in the first meeting, and 61-37 in the second meeting, but were able to play even for much of those games before decisive runs proved costly.
