Lakeside clinches North Star title

| February 1, 2017 12:00 AM

PLUMMER — Lakeside rallied from seven points down with 3 minutes left to edge Genesis Prep 53-49 and capture the North Star League girls basketball championship Tuesday night at Ron Miller Court.

After a 3-pointer by Trinity Morrow put Genesis Prep (10-5, 6-2 NSL) up by seven, Lakeside (14-1, 9-0) rallied behind a five-point play. Corin Peone hit a 3-pointer, and a foul on Genesis Prep away from the ball gave the Knights the ball back. Olivia Palmer scored on the inbounds play, and Lakeside eventually took the lead for good on free throws.

“It really just shows their toughness,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “They didn’t quit; they kept fighting. We didn’t play our best basketball tonight, but we fought hard. Keep playing; you never know what’s going to happen.”

Rachel Schroeder led Genesis Prep with 21 points. Bella Murekatete added 12 but was saddled with foul trouble and eventually fouled out in the fourth.
