A good one on tap for Super Sunday?

| February 4, 2017 12:00 AM

So there’s a football game to be played on Sunday afternoon.

And while it might sting a little bit if you’re not rooting for the New England Patriots or the Atlanta Falcons from September to Super Bowl Sunday, my advice is simple.

Just sit back and enjoy it this weekend.

FOR ALL the talk about Tom Brady, whether he flattened footballs a few years ago, was suspended to start the season and him being the greatest quarterback to play the game, the last nugget is well deserved.

Brady will take the field — unless he ends up eating some great barbecue on Saturday night and unable to get out of bed — for the seventh time on Super Bowl Sunday.

Seven times.

Now, he’s 4-2 in those games with the lone losses coming against Eli Manning and the New York Giants, and Eli’s not on the other side of the field this weekend.

Granted, there has been some great quarterbacks before him, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw that have won the game a handful of times. To be honest, watching Montana and the 49ers shread the Denver Bronco defense in the Super Bowl at the Superdome in New Orleans was the first Super Bowl I remember watching with a big interest in the outcome.

Montana never lost in the big game, and neither did Bradshaw, who will likely be handing the trophy over to whoever wins this weekend as a member of the FOX broadcast team who is doing the game this year.

Brady is an incredible quarterback, and is one of the best to ever play the game. With a fifth title, chances are he’ll be considered the greatest Super Bowl quarterback of all time, and deservingly so.

But when it comes to all-time great, the unbeaten legends of Montana and Bradshaw are tough to beat, even if they didn’t quite get their teams to the finish line as much as Brady.

THEN AGAIN, there’s a really good team opposing those New England Patriots with Atlanta in its second Super Bowl in franchise history.

The Falcons will move into a new stadium next year, and coach Dan Quinn has done a fantastic job getting that team turned around so fast in his second year with the team.

Offensively, the team has been tough to stop for a long time, handing the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers some pretty significant whippings at home to get to the big game.

In case you forgot, Quinn was the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks when the team won the Super Bowl in 2014 and lost to New England in 2015.

And he’s got his team playing at a high level on both offense and defense, something that went a long way in getting his previous team a Super Bowl title.

While I’m not totally convinced the Falcons can finish the job that Quinn’s previous team came up a yard short on, that doesn’t mean that the Patriots are going to run away with their fifth title with Brady under center.

Regardless of who wins, it should be one worth sitting in front of the television for a few hours, instead of shoveling snow.
