EDUCATION: Choice is good
In the recent “DeVos Confirmation Leads to Questions, Educated Guesses” article, many notable individuals voice their protest of DeVos’ approval as education secretary. What these people fail to consider is the honorable position DeVos stands for: school choice. When protesters assert that supporting private and charter schools harms children, they ignore the benefits of such high academics as well as the hazards of federalized education. It is well-known that charter and private schools produce very well educated scholars. If we want the best for our children, should we not have the choice of how they are educated, instead of allowing a corrupt system to indoctrinate them?
Let us not forget home-educated families. Since they pay the same taxes for the public education system, they should be allowed to choose how their youth are taught. For those who think homeschooling is ineffective in preparing children for success, consider this: Albert Einstein, J.R.R. Tolkien, Tim Tebow, Nick Jonas and Chloë Grace Moretz were all homeschooled for part of or all of their education.
In a world where choice is cherished, why is the choice of education being suppressed? We must stand with DeVos in pursuing the freedoms we fight for, including education.
