COEUR d’ALENE — This time, it was Lewiston that got off to the hot start.

This time, it was Lake City that didn’t give up.

The Timberwolves dug themselves out of an early hole, took the lead for good after three quarters and went on to beat the Bengals 53-46 in the second-place game of the 5A Region 1 girls basketball tournament Friday night at Lake City.

Lake City (18-5) advances to play Borah (18-8) of Boise today at 3 p.m. at Grangeville High in a play-in game to the state 5A tournament.

Lewiston (14-8) hit four 3-pointers in the first two minutes and led by 11 points in the first quarter before Lake City responded.

“They came out just shooting the lights out,” Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. “It’s a tough matchup for us because they’re all guards, and we’re not.”

Lake City pulled to within six points at halftime. Then senior post Lauren Rewers scored nine of her game-high 22 points in the third quarter to help put the T-Wolves ahead after three, 36-35.

“We kept battling and battling,” Kelly said. “What we do best is pound the ball inside, and I thought we did an amazing job doing that. And our bigs went to work.”

Rewers was 9 of 13 from the field for the game, including 4 of 4 (with a 3-pointer) in the second half. Nina Carlson added 12 points, Bridget Rieken added 10 on 10-of-12 free-throw shooting, and Keara Simpson had 11 rebounds. Rieken and point guard Chloe Teets had five assists each.

Cameron Cady scored 12 points to lead Lewiston, which made just two 3-pointers the rest of the game.

One week ago, Lake City jumped out to a 13-2 lead, only to see Lewiston come back to win 52-40.

Lake City beat Borah 41-36 in December at the TimberLion tournament in Boise.
