Choosing a lender
When you decide to take the plunge and become a homeowner your first step should be to find someone who will loan you the money to achieve that goal. Loan requirements are not as stringent as they once were, but unless you have a wealthy relative to borrow from, you will still need to demonstrate an ability to repay the loan. This can be accomplished even if your credit score is less than stellar.

Spring is here it just HAS to be!
According to the calendar, we’ve now passed Arbor Day. If that doesn’t mean spring is here at last, I give up. It does look like spring as things are blooming right and left with everything from the tiniest spring bulb to the tallest flowering tree. A great reward after a long, cold, snowy, wet winter.

SPENDING: D vs. GOP
Trump: The money pit from Paul Underwood of St. Maries, attacks President Trump and his family. Easy to see Paul is a far lefty and he whines because his Queen Hillary did not win. He attacks Melania Trump for costing $150,000 per day, don’t know if cost is true or not, but as long as it is a Trump family member it cost too much. He also believes that the rest of the Trump family should not be guarded as it cost money. I am sure Paul never complained about President Obama’s cost of guarding his family members or when Michelle Obama took vacations in Europe and took many of her friends and used Air Force One for traveling and paid for all of her friends’ hotel rooms, etc. Now maybe her friends paid for their own rooms, I don’t know, but U.S. citizens paid for the air travel and all of the Secret Service personnel that had to travel with them.

Body mechanics
We all understand the problem with poor alignment when it comes to mechanical aspects of our car. If our wheels are out of alignment or something is bent or tweaked in the engine, these areas wear out quicker and/or break suddenly, leading to costly repairs. Body mechanics are exactly the same and most of us are guilty of ignoring posture and movement problems when we exercise or are active. Even simple sitting and bending is often done incorrectly, causing us pain, stiffness and ultimately alignment problems.

In every wine lover's journey there is something that grabs us. That moment that not only draws us in, but when we realize we are going to have an appreciation for and enjoy wine for a very long time. It is that sip that cuts through all the swirling and sniffing, and the endless sea of tasting notes and ratings which reveals a wine we truly love. It is called many things, the “aha moment,” the wine epiphany, or “that one bottle,” but what it does is far more powerful. It creates a lasting memory of that bottle and that time that we can recall in an instant. If you are fortunate enough, you will have more than one of these memories along your wine journey, but it won’t happen every time and it will surprise you every time it does.

Annual Quality Drinking Water Report BAYVIEW WATER AND SEWER DISTRICT We're very pleased to provide you with this year's Annual Water Quality Report. We want to keep you informed about the excellent water and services we have delivered you over the past year. Our goal is and always has been, to provide to you a safe and dependable supply of drinking water. Our water source is from wells in Farragut State Park which tap into the Rathdrum Aquifer. Our water is safe and meets Federal and State requirements. We have available a Source Water Assessment Report at our office and will make a copy for anyone who wishes to view it. If you have any questions about this year's water quality report, or concerning your Water Utility, please contact Reid O'Conner; System Operator, at 208-683-3948. We want our valued customers to be informed about their Water Utility. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled meetings. They are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 3:30 pm at the Bayview Water and Sewer District Office. Bayview Water and Sewer District routinely monitors for constituents in your drinking water according to Federal and State laws, This report covers the period of January 1st to December 31st, 2016. All drinking water, including bottled drinking water, may be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some constituents. It is important to remember that the presence of these constituents does not necessarily post a health risk. If you are interested in seeing the test results of the contaminants our system tests for routinely, please feel free to contact us between the hours of 9 am to 4pm Monday through Thursday. Our system routinely tests for Inorganic Compounds, Volatile Organic Compounds, and Synthetic Organic Compounds. The following test results show non-detectable in the categories tested. Also attached to this report is a list of the above compounds for which our system has received waivers from the Department of Environmental Quality for testing during 2016. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immune System compromised persons, such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers, EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by crypotsporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). Please call our office if you have questions. We at the Bayview Water and Sewer District work around the clock to provide top quality water to every tap. We ask that all our customers help us protect our water sources, which are the heart of our community, our way of life and our children's future. A copy of this report will be published in the Coeur d' Alene Press, and will be posted in the Bayview Water and Sewer District Office. If any person wishes to have a copy, please contact the Bayview Water and Sewer District Office at 683-3948, to receive one. LEGAL 7473 APR 24, 2017

A good day for a run

Will this be a tough fire season for the U.S.?
For the first time in recorded history, Coeur d’Alene’s moisture total has exceeded 20 inches before the end of April. The normal year to date is just over 9 inches and our seasonal average is 26.77 inches. Cliff and I are predicting about 40 inches of rain and melted snow for the 2017 season. That would not be a record as 43.27 inches fell in 2012. However, in this cycle of wide weather “extremes,” I wouldn’t be surprised to see that record fall as well.

PROTESTERS: Get a grip
The liberal protesters search hard for reasons to protest, for instance: Trump’s tax forms which would generate a large volume of forms. It is not a law. The release of two pages of his 2005 taxes showed that he had paid taxes at a higher rate, and donated a larger percentage to charity than did the Clintons. Obamas, or Sanders. Liberals did not mind that we could not see Hillary’s emails which showed racist views, and communication with people she was not supposed to communicate with. Then, Obama’s birth certificate — a one-page document. Testimony about the “benefits” of Obamacare certainly represent a smaller number than the problems it causes middle-class families — for instance, having a $6,000 deductible to deal with government.

COLUMN: Travel with wisdom
Sholeh’s column about denying a travel Visa to the USA for the professor from South America is a sad testament about the growing negative attitude toward “the others,” whoever they are. As a nation, we have made this mistake before. During World War II, we turned away a ship full of Jewish people who had escaped the Nazi’s by sending them back to Europe and death in Auschwitz. We also interned the Japanese who lived on the west coast and never locked up anyone of German descent. I think it is time for many, not all, Americans to face up to their self-inflicted fears. Maybe they should “get out more,” like to other countries themselves. It was the best education I ever received. I had the privilege of spending 32 years flying literally around the world. Along the way, I came across this wonderful summation about travel by Patrick Rothfuss: “No man is brave that has never walked a hundred miles. If you want to know the truth of who you are, walk until not a person knows your name. Travel is the great leveler, the great teacher, bitter as medicine, crueler than the mirror-glass. A long stretch of road will teach you more about yourself than a hundred years of introspection.” I learned to rejoice and embrace the humanity I shared with people who were genetically and culturally different from me, but shared a sameness in our hearts that is the goodness of our humanity.

Who's who are taking to the dance stage
A year ago I declared there were two things I knew I’d never do; jump out of a perfectly good airplane or become a professional dancer. I’ve stayed true to my word. Last year’s debut of Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre’s Dancing with the Celebrities took me and the other non-dancers far, far outside the comfort zone.
SENTENCE: Honor dishonored
Let me get this straight … This punk coward, William Robertson, beats a completely disabled young man so badly that he needs stitches AND has to have a testicle removed, and all he gets is a lousy 10 days in jail and a small fine? Yet on the very next page a woman mistreats her horses and gets 12 days in jail.
Spotting hunger in Idaho
When we hear the word “hunger” we often associate it with the impoverished children we see in commercials on TV who look like they are wasting away on the streets of third world countries. We often don’t think of hunger being in our own communities, classrooms, and neighborhoods. Hunger is everywhere. The Idaho Food Bank reports that 1 in 5 children in Idaho are facing food insecurity, meaning they may not know where their next meal is coming from. Food insecurity can put children at nutritional risk, which may lead to a myriad of problems, both in the immediate and long-term future. Children who are hungry may also struggle academically, with more behavioral issues and lower attendance rates than children who are not dealing with hunger.

The most challenging varietal
Perhaps the most fascinating part of our own and many consumers’ wine journey is exploring the wines and growing regions of the “Old World.” Whether you are traveling the appellations of Europe or just tasting through the wines that come from different European areas that you buy here at home, it becomes clear that different varietals grow in different areas for the simplest of reasons. It is because each varietal is more suited to the growing area it comes from.

GRIDLOCK: Time for Turbolax
It appears to this concerned citizen that the entire bunch back there on the hill in Washington, D.C., are more than a little bound-up, unable to get the job done. Perhaps a simple solution to this major problem may be no more than administering to each of them an abundant dose of laxative. Maybe, just maybe that will loosen things up and clean them out enough that once again they will be able to catch a clean breath of air.
PROTEST: Citizenship questioned
I noticed there were 300 (that’s not the same as Spartan 300) at the anti-Trump rally Saturday. I wonder how many are actually true citizens of North Idaho, or just anarchists or part of the San Francisco movement of resistance against freedom of speech, religious freedom, democracy, free market and the Constitution. They want Trump to release his tax returns. That’s much like Hillary Clinton trying to come clean on Benghazi and in her own words (What difference does it make?). Really, human lives don’t matter?

Catastrophic logging threatens national forests
National Forests across the West are facing dire threats from politicians, the timber industry and the Forest Service. The public is currently being misled into thinking that our forests are “unhealthy,” and that they need to be “restored” due to “beetle infestations” and “insect and disease.” All of this is euphemism to drastically ramp up logging on the forests.

Does my child have a concussion?
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall, or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. Most people think that you only get a concussion if you hit your head, not true. A blow elsewhere on the body can cause a concussion even if an athlete does not hit their head directly. If an athlete, especially a child gets tackled hard enough that can result is a concussion. Concussions can range from mild to severe, and athletes can get a concussion even if they are wearing a helmet.

Can acupuncture really help weight loss?
This is an oft-asked question. “Can acupuncture really help weight loss?” The answer is a resounding “yes!” Acupuncture can help by different means. It is not generally used as a stand-alone approach, but combined with good, sound nutrition, exercise and supplementation with food concentrates, the results can be quite pleasing. But how does acupuncture work for weight loss?

Common symptoms of FM include chronic fatigue and mental fog. The focus of this discussion will be on exercise and chiropractic.

Tis the season for ... thunderstorms
Last Monday, April 10, was another example of our extreme weather pattern across the Inland Empire. During the early morning hours, Cliff measured 3.3 inches of snow in northwest Coeur d’Alene, taking our seasonal snowfall total to 115.4 inches. That’s the sixth-highest total since records began in 1895. It’s also the fourth time we’ve gone over 100 inches of snow for a season in less than 10 years. I thought there would be some snowflakes into the middle of April, but not 3.3 inches worth.

STATISTICS: Truth and lies
Last week was a letter to the editor in which the writer claimed there are 94 million people out of work in the United States. This statement is true, however as truly representing the unemployed, it is a lie. With a little research I found the source of that statement, Breitbart news. According to Breitbart, 94 million Americans are out or work “due to discouragement, retirement or otherwise.” Included in this supposed 94 million is everyone from the age of 16 to a 99-year-old in a nursing home. But if one wants the number of individuals actually looking for work (the truly unemployed), the current number is 7,202,000. The current unemployment rate is 4.5 percent and has been continuously falling since early 2009.

Confused about foods
There are only two things I think everyone can agree on, bar none — that food and water are vital to our health and life. But that seems to be where the commonality ends. This subject is fraught with confusion. Food, in particular is vital to the vibrancy of our health. With proper nutrients we can resolve most health issues, allowing us to have a good quality of life, rather than a life of suffering. How we get those nutrients is where the gap in commonality widens even more.
Snowbirds are onto something
Our neighbors are snowbirds, having enjoyed the past five months or so of fall and winter in the Arizona sunshine. I noticed their motorhome back in the neighborhood first thing Monday morning. How does Idaho measure up?
Last week’s Coeur d’Alene Press had a well-done two-part series addressing the annual report that compares health, social and environmental factors across counties in every state. Kootenai County had a mixed set of marginal to poor statistics. Reading through the comparatives between our Idaho counties was interesting and made me wonder how the U.S. compares globally. This information also made me wonder: how does Idaho compare with our neighboring states?

Why a dirty window is beautiful
In your Dec. 9, 2016, edition, there was a picture where “A bird leaves its mark Thursday on the window of 360 Fitness.” I was very sad to see the photograph. I am a member of the Coeur d’Alene Audubon Society, and it was a reminder of the billion birds that die every year due to window strikes. According to the Washington Post, “As many as 988 million birds die annually in window collisions. Between 365 and 988 million birds die from crashing into windows in the United States each year, according to a new report. That may be as much as 10 percent of the estimated total bird population of the country.”

EDUCATION: Leaders needed
On a recent phone call with Governor Otter, he discussed how he and 49 other governors created Common Core. I note that his full support of Common Core (or something better) has yet to take place. Teachers and their unions have done everything possible to strike down Common Core because it would hold them accountable. Districts “call the shots” in ways that leave the majority of kids poorly educated. Those leaving third grade unable to read (about 16 percent) ultimately cost Idaho and America over $1 million each in prison and welfare costs. (Dept. of Justice data).

TRIBE: A double-standard?
During the CSRBA adjudication hearing March 30 an eyewitness reported that Coeur d’Alene tribal representative Phil Cenera made numerous hand gestures showing his desire to use a gun and shoot several of the attorneys representing various objectors to the federal water rights claims during oral argument. It’s very disturbing that the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, through their representatives, show how much hatred they really have for non-Indians. If you agree with the tribe they reward you like Pavlov’s dog, but dare to stand up for yourself and you will be the victim of racist and violent aggressive gestures or worse, and somehow it is allowed.
RECYCLE: Kudos to KEA
Good for KEA getting a glass recycling program launched in Coeur d’Alene. We will all be better off for their efforts in recycling glass. The cities and counties could turn a profit if they contracted with, say, Interstate, put it through their rock crusher and add it to drainage gravel and backfill material if they can get it small enough. Spokane recycles glass and puts it into road asphalt. We need to do that as well.

COLUMN: Cause for concern
Bill Brooks’s column reminds me of the columns we used to write in our junior high newspaper, though we were better writers. Normally I ignore his modern day version of the Salem Witch Trials but I caught sight of the RV story and was shocked at what modern day column writing has become. Did he really mean to imply that a company should question whether an older adult should be allowed to make a purchase? Does he have a questionnaire he gives senior citizens in order to sell them a house? How does he determine if they are competent to enter into that kind of contract? That seems like it really flirts with discrimination to me but then if he is as good a real estate agent as he is a writer, there is nothing to worry about.

A cure for the 'common' headache
Headaches mean big business, and this is especially the case when the cause underlying the headache pain goes undetected and therefore the headache pain is not successfully treated. Drugs are not a cure; they are not like antibiotics which actually kill bacteria that are causing the sickness. Drugs only mask the headache pain symptoms until the drug wears off, and they can cause other problems and even make the pain worse so one has to take even higher doses of drugs.

Choosing the right title company
You are about to make what is likely the largest investment of your life — a piece of real estate. In Idaho, selection of the Title Company is the buyer’s. Title is the right to use your property as you see fit. Any restrictions on its use will be recorded as a condition, covenant or restriction. A title report will reveal these CCRs as well as any number of easements which provide access to your property. Title insurance guarantees the rights of the property owner and is often paid by the seller of the property to warrant to the purchaser that they are protected from defects and will have unencumbered title. If the buyer encumbers the property, the lender will require a second policy to protect their interest in your real estate.
