ZAGS: Not refs' fault

| April 7, 2017 1:00 AM

I just read the biased article by Steve Cameron in Tuesday’s paper. Mr. Cameron blamed the referees for the Zags loss. The Zags lost because of missed free throws and missed opportunities.

Look, I had the Zags and UNC in my finals bracket, with UNC on top. Would I have liked the Zags to win? Yeah sure, but UNC showed more poise down the stretch. Plus the refs didn’t cause the two consecutive turnovers by the Zags to start the second half. I didn’t see Perkins hit a three pointer in the second half either, like he did in the first half.

The way I see it is, Roy Williams made better second-half adjustments than Mark Few. Coach Williams has been in that moment a few more times than Coach Few, and showed more poise down the stretch. Oh wait, the Zags big men were in more foul trouble than the UNC big men. Not true. Meeks sat on the bench with four fouls with about 10:30 left in the second half. Big “Shem” didn’t sit until about 5 minutes left. Plus, Gonzaga got to the bonus quicker than UNC in the second half and the double bonus.

If UNC had lost, I would have blamed their missed free throws, and missed shots. Berry was the only one for UNC to hit a three; everyone else missed for UNC. Can’t blame the refs for that.

Gonzaga needs a little more poise in the moment, like the loss against BYU.
