Timberlake swings past St. Maries
- SOFTBALL
SPIRIT LAKE — Hannah McGrath went 4 for 4 with five RBIs in the first game for the Timberlake Tigers in a 15-5 and 8-7 sweep of the St. Maries Lumberjacks on Wednesday at Timberlake High.
Shelby Starr went 3 for 3 with three RBIs in the opener for Timberlake.
In the second game, Shelby Salois went 3 for 3 at the plate and Jacquelyn Mallet was 2 for 2 in the Tigers win.
“It was nice the weather held out and we were able to get the games in,” Timberlake coach Casi Reisenauer said. “In the first game, we had a ton of hits and in the second, I was proud of how the girls played. They came back and tied it, but our defense really helped out a lot, and I was happy to see that. In our first four games, I’m really happy with what I’ve seen so far.”
Kelsey Auer hit a grand slam in the first game for St. Maries (1-2), which hosts Bonners Ferry on Friday.
Timberlake (4-0) is scheduled to host Lakeland today.

Lakeland 12-7
Timberlake 3-2
SPIRIT LAKE — Thanks to rough March weather, Timberlake opened its season — finally — with a tough opponent.
School district rival Lakeland pounded out 24 hits en route to a 12-3, 7-2 sweep of the host Tigers.
The Hakws (4-1) had 16 hits in the opener to back pitcher JJ Mackesy, who struck out eight Tigers in five innings. Senior Tucker Price had a triple among his three hits and knocked in 3 runs, while catcher Jared McDaniel had a double and 3 RBI.
“These were our first two games of the season and it was evident offensively — it was our first time seeing live pitching,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “Lakeland hit the ball very well and their pitchers threw strikes.”
In the nightcap, Dylan Bradbury earned a complete-game victory for the Hawks, allowing two runs and five hits while striking out six. Timberlake’s Seth Villapando and Logan McDonald knocked in runs to keep the hosts within 4-2, but Lakeland’s Max Baker hit a solo homer in the seventh to help the Hawks close out the win.
Knigge was pleased with sophomore Kobe Harris, who threw two innings to close out the opener, and freshman Jack McDonald, who pitched five solid innings in game two. Tiger catcher David Hansen had three hits overall, and alertly scored from first in the fifth inning of the opener to prevent a 10 run-rule win by Lakeland.
Lakeland hosts Lake City Friday in nonconference action, while Timberlake travels to Clarkston, Wash., for a doubleheader Tuesday.

SPOKANE VALLEY — Daniel Gunnerson struck out nine in four innings and the Vikings beat the Knights.
“What I love about Daniel is that he had two walks and wasn’t happy with how he threw,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “And that’s what makes him as great as he is. He did a great job of attacking the strike zone and keeping them off balance.”
Cameron Luckey, Jackson Sumner and Brady Thompson had two RBIs each for Coeur d’Alene (7-2), which is scheduled to host Cheney on April 13.
“We just had quality at-bats throughout the lineup and have been really good at being fundamentally sound,” Mahin said. “It was a good game all-around and we did a good job of playing team baseball yet again.”
