VETOES: Another alternative
Sen. Steve Vick had an opinion column in the paper April 15 in which he suggested that the best way to deal with the governor vetoing a bill after the end of the legislative session would be a Constitutional Amendment that would allow the Legislature to be called into session again.
Since this would be a fairly expensive operation, and since most legislators would not really want to go back for another session, probably the best way to handle a situation like this would be a provision that allowed for any bill that has a veto proof vote to automatically become law without the approval of the governor. That would save passing the bill, then his veto, then sending it back to the Legislature, then their taking it up again and voting on it.
Regardless of how you may feel about the grocery tax (or other popular issues), you have to admit that Sen. Vick is on the right track. Something obviously has to be done.
