WASTE: Stick it elsewhere
So the Feds want to ship some liquid from Vermont to Idaho. Folks, they are not talking about maple syrup, but 200,000 gallons of low level waste liquid for Idaho to store and deal with. Why does our great state have to become the repository for everyone else’s waste materials?
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the environmental statement it paid for said “It’s OK,” no problems. The study told them what they wanted to hear and paid for. I would be curious as to how/who can predict in the future no problems will occur? Must be a pretty sharp crystal ball. The area they propose to store this nuclear waste in (SE Idaho) is in a pretty significant seismic activity area that no one can successfully predict when the earth will shift underground and what damage it will do. What happens if one of the tank transporters is involved in an accident and spills its contents?
It’s time for Gov. “Butch” Otter to man up along with the Legislature and simply say “NO” and stand by it. Look at what has happened at Hanford, just to our west! Lessons learned and understood.
