CAMERON: Watch your language
Steve Cameron, your column in the Oct. 18 was so dumb. You called a person a whore! Couldn’t you come up with another word to describe LeBron James? In the same day, George Sayler wrote such a good heart message. What does hateful words fix? NOTHING! It only makes the matter worse. So grow up and find another way to let people know your feelings. Like my Mom used to say, “If you can’t say something nice, then keep your mouth shut!” Good advice, huh?
ROETTER: Right on the money
I’m writing in support of Matthew Roetter for the Hayden City Council. Having known Matt for more than a decade and working with him on numerous issues involving both the city and the county, I know him to be an honest and straightforward representative of the people. Matt understands that each dollar taken from taxpayers is a dollar that must be put to its best use in benefitting the people of Hayden.
ROETTER: Vote for my dad
I’ve had the privilege of being born and raised in North Idaho and living in the city of Hayden for the past 30 years. Matt Roetter, my father, has shown nothing but loyalty and integrity for his family while raising us here and I have no doubt he will show the same for the city of Hayden. For the past eight years, my dad has cooked and hosted Sunday dinner for our immediate family, which is usually 16 people. He has an immense love for us and his grandchildren and is creating a legacy that we will forever cherish. Papa is sharing his love of the outdoors with his grandchildren and enjoys taking them on fishing trips, with treats included.

I have a recipe that dates back many years that I enjoy making a couple of times each year. I can tell the recipe is a bit “vintage” based on the print style of the magazine I clipped it from, the publication from font to layout looks much different today after a couple of updates. I recently made the recipe and over time I have made some adjustments to it. I have made these adjustments according to my own taste on how I like food, but the point is, I have the recipe in a pretty good place based on mine and Mary’s likes and dislikes.

What about metabolic syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome is not a disease itself, but rather a cluster of health concerns that, as a combination, present as a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Since first defined and published in 1998 by the World Health Organization (WHO), it has deservingly received much attention in the worlds of medical care and preventive care. Although the criteria differs from one agency to another, according to the National Institutes of Health, the four central components are: insulin resistance, visceral adiposity, atherogenic dyslipidemia and endothelial dysfunction. Different medical institutes put different spins on their definition – some requiring Type-2 diabetes, others central obesity, and others simply “insulin resistance” as the core definition — and then requiring two of four other factors (hypertension being one of them) to make the diagnosis; there is general agreement as to these four.

SALVAGE: How to fix it
Your Oct. 23 editorial about salary salvage was most informative, but you seem to have overlooked an important detail: Title 31, Ch. 16 Idaho Code sets forth the rules for establishing salaries and other compensation for employees. Your comment: “Had the bonuses been budgeted, nobody would have lifted an eyebrow” puts the proper limit on the activities you described. That is: Idaho Law does not provide a legal basis for the County Clerk’s actions.

OPEN ARMS: Animals vs. humans
I have noticed twice recently front page and prominent headlines elsewhere in The Press promoting the new animal shelter in Hayden, along with a fundraiser at the Hagadone Event Center. I think it is admirable that people want to treat pets in a humane way. Yet at the same time I wonder how many people know what “Open Arms” here in Coeur d’Alene is all about, or about their fundraiser at the Hagadone Event Center on Oct. 5 to build a new facility to serve the public free of charge. Three hundred seventy people attended yet not one picture or article, even on the back page was to be found in The Press. Why do you suppose that is? Could there be a little bias going on here?

I was deeply disappointed to read the recent article announcing the Trump rally organized by a local Republican group. I don’t have a problem with those who have differing views from mine, or any gatherings organized to support their causes or beliefs. RALLY: That wasn't newsworthy
You had the wrong story on the front page Friday. The death of Elijah Cummings deserved more than a page 3 short mention. Cummings was a great leader in a time of crisis in our democracy. By the way, that hardly constitutes a sea of red.

As the spouse of a recent retiree, our household is facing a new normal, watching our budget down to the penny. We understand and accept that lifestyle adjustment for the benefits of more free time. All a 'grape' can do
This past week we held one of our back-to-back events, a winemaker dinner on Thursday then a tasting here at the shop on Friday evening. Our guest for these events was Javier Bayona, from Bodegas Chavarri, located in the Rioja Region of Spain. We had scheduled these events many months ago when Javier was in the shop so that we could taste his portfolio of wines. We are always so honored when a winemaker or winery owner makes the trip from Europe just for events here in our “small-ish” wine community of North Idaho! It was a fabulous pair of events and we can’t thank Javier enough for making the journey, especially since it was complete with a 4-hour delay in Denver due to snow. As always, the wine dinner at Fleur de Sel was exceptional. Not only was the food and service all we have come to expect from Laurent and Patricia and their team at “FDS,” we are always amazed at how Laurent embraces the origin and adapts his classical French training to other cuisines, in this case Spanish fare.

Reading offers big benefits to children
An Aug. 21 editorial published in The Press stated, “While schools are doing their best to raise the reading bar for kids, one can’t help but wonder why so many entry-level kids already are behind. Well, we know the answer, don’t we? The youngest kids aren’t being taught or encouraged to read at home. That’s a failure on the parents’ part. It’s also an indictment of society, where electronic entertainment is playing increasingly prominent roles in rearing our children. This shortcoming is one of the easiest to overcome: Study after study shows that by reading to our children from the earliest stages of their lives, literacy comes to them more easily and effectively. We’re not talking hours and hours of intensive parental work, either. Reading to your kids a little bit each night can have a dramatically positive, lifelong impact.”

INMATE: I did look it up
To Ms. Holland, M.S., according to Webster’s College Dictionary, I didn’t have an Oxford handy, “inmate… 1. a person who is confined in a prison, hospital, etc.” Mr. Murphy wasn’t clear as to what type of facilities are currently located in his residential area. He stated several times they were “mental hospitals,” but I’m fairly certain they are neither prison nor hospital. I wouldn’t think city or county codes would allow a prison or a hospital in a residential area. If that is occurring, that is definitely a serious separate issue.

The Northwest crop
The fall harvest throughout the West has turned more exciting than any winemaker or grape grower would prefer. We have written over the last several weeks about the challenges California has faced so far, so we felt it was appropriate to cover the goings on closer to home, in the vineyards of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. And there has been much going on to be sure!

Everything we hear about stomach acid is that it is bad for you. Medicines abound that help sop it up or stop the body, as much as possible, from producing it. But what if we are wrong? One of the biggest benefits of the chiropractic adjustment is that it is a completely drug-free way to heal the body naturally. Finding a good chiropractor is important for anyone wanting to take a proactive approach to protecting their health. The benefits of chiropractic care go beyond the obvious neck and lower back pain. Here are four non-musculoskeletal benefits to the chiropractic adjustment based on evidence from medical research studies, systematic reviews and case studies.

Do vitamin D supplements protect against colds and flu as good as a flu shot?
Living in the beautiful northwest like we do, odds are that you don’t get enough vitamin D. The same holds true if you don’t get outside for at least a 15-minute daily walk in the sun. Being deficient in vitamin D may increase the risk of a whole host of chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis, heart disease, depression and multiple sclerosis among others, and even the seasonal flu. Recently, studies have come to light showing how vitamin D can help our immune system to combat the flu and respiratory infections.

What helps indigestion, heartburn and reflux?
In the U.S., it is estimated that 60 to 70 million people suffer from digestive-related diseases. Doctors are writing $114 million in acid-reducing medication prescriptions. That doesn’t include over-the-counter sales. It’s big business! What’s worse is that taking acid-reducing medications to treat these issues can actually cause, or contribute to many of the diseases we are suffering from today. Yet there are many remedies that actually fix the problem, not just cover them up.

Domestic violence is often invisible reality
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but for those who live in the hell of that reality it’s every month 24/7. There is no minute of any day that you’re not walking on eggshells, holding your breath, vowing to be more of something or less of something in order to keep a blow up from happening. There’s no minute of any day that you’re not drowning in the hopelessness of the situation and expending Herculean effort to mask what’s going on behind closed doors, questioning and second guessing how you came to find yourself in such a dark place. There’s no minute of any day that you aren’t wondering how to survive for just another minute of one more day.
