COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Vikings apparently got the attention of the Lake City Timberwolves with their 1-0 victory at Lake City a week and a half ago.
Lake City delivered a little payback Tuesday night, spoiling senior night by routing the Vikings 4-0 on the Coeur d’Alene High football field to clinch the 5A Inland Empire League title for the seventh straight year.
“They definitely played with a chip on their shoulder; they came out and outplayed us almost the entire game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said of Lake City. “I’ve got to do a better job getting my girls mentally prepared to play those games.”
Madyson Smith scored a pair of unassisted goals for Lake City (8-2, 4-1 5A IEL), which did all its scoring damage in the first 47 minutes. Maddy Lasher added two assists for the Timberwolves.
“They were winning all the 50/50 balls,” Vredenburg said of Lake City. “They came out with the more physical play. They were playing faster, and with a lot more intensity.”
Vredenburg did have praise for his goalkeeper, Lily Foster, amidst the Lake City barrage.
“She had an incredible game; she had some big saves,” he said. “Early in the game she made some big saves to keep us in it.”
