CATS: Show them some mercy

| October 18, 2019 1:00 AM

In regard to the “cat” letter to The Press in Sunday’s (Sept. 8) paper, which was taped to my door while I was on vacation:

I’ve lived in this home for 26 years with many indoor cats. I moved here after retiring from the government and moved here from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, with three indoor cats. They were strays that were left on my doorstep; they were taken in and cared for until they crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. All indoor cats.

One of them sneaks out once in a while, and when she comes home she runs right to her litter box. Then all that changed when someone left a mama cat with five feral babies and a yellow bowl of water in my backyard. I’m pretty sure the cats didn’t bring the bowl of water by themselves. This happened on Aug. 16, 2016.

For three years, I’ve had them every day. They’ve all been spayed with the help of a devoted animal lover and the Kootenai Humane Society, which has taken many litters in. I didn’t ask for these cats, but I surely would not let them starve or freeze out there in the cold. I’m more worried about the 35-pound raccoons out there than four little 10-pound cats.
