Coeur d'Alene tops Post Falls in 'Volleyball 4 the Cure' match

| October 4, 2019 1:00 AM

POST FALLS — On a night that was much bigger than volleyball, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings got 14 kills and seven blocks from Elly Schraeder in a 25-22, 25-13, 26-28, 25-19 victory over the Post Falls Trojans in the “Volleyball 4 the Cure” match for cancer awareness Thursday night at The Arena.

Taylin Rowley added 13 kills and five aces for Coeur d’Alene (18-5, 3-1 5A Inland Empire League). Courtney Garwood had 15 assists, 12 digs and three aces, Lili Hare six blocks, Lauren Phillips 20 assists, Maggie Bloom 13 digs.

“Schraeder was tough in the middle; she really hit the ball hard,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “Their libero, Maggie Bloom, she was passing nails in the back row. We only had two aces the entire night.”

For Post Falls (8-11, 0-4), Maya Blake had 19 kills, Kassie Gardiner 21 assists, Aly Carpenter 13 digs. Brielle Nagel and Brooklyn Minden had one ace each, and Kamden Fiddes, Laura Moler and Madi John had one block each.

The Trojans, who dug themselves holes in the first two sets, were down by four points late in the third set, before battling back to extend the match.

“I was proud of their grit,” Barkley said. “We got thumped in that second set pretty hard, and they responded to our pep talk.”

Barkley praised the huge crowd, and said “the student sections for both schools were amazing.”

The total amount raised was still being determined. As part of the proceeds, the teams donated $500 to a family in Post Falls whose daughter is battling cancer.

“It was nice to give back to the community,” Barkley said. “Obviously disappointed in the loss, but this is bigger than volleyball.”

On Tuesday, Coeur d’Alene plays host to Sandpoint, and Post Falls is home vs. 5A IEL-leading Lake City.
