Kill post-TD silliness; love Simone's style

| October 25, 2019 1:00 AM

“You’ve got mail.”

That is both a movie title and my everyday life.

When you toss opinions out to the public a few times each week, well, you’re going to hear from the good folks who’ve read the stuff.

And without question, I get the MOST feedback when I go all-in praising some athlete or event — and likewise, when I’m totally down on something or someone.

So today…

You get a little of both worlds — some clown behavior I think is totally ridiculous at football games, followed by wholehearted appreciation for an athlete who is not only spectacular, but the best in history at her sport.

And we’re off…

BOO, HISS: OK, I’ve never liked idiotic dance moves or self-congratulatory hip-hop routines after a touchdown.

But now this silliness has gotten ridiculous.

The most obnoxious behavior these days is seven or eight guys turning up in the back of the end zone, then arranging themselves in the pose for an imaginary “team picture.”

Quite a few of the Seahawks have begun doing it, too, and it’s embarrassing.

There’s no point to it, except to suggest that this might be the only TD you’ll ever score.

They look like fools.

If we want a photo of the whole squad, we’ll get one at Amazon.

Or wherever.

These hip-wiggles that go on and on, plus the pretend team photos, are particularly stupid when you’re busy losing a game — or even when it’s in doubt.

At one time, choreographed celebrations were outlawed and penalized, but the NFL now allows everything short of “Dancing with the Stars” after a touchdown.

I’d rather see the next car commercial than acrobatics like that.

They demean the opponent — not to mention football itself.

Call me old-fashioned, but I’m a believer in the gospel of the late Hall of Fame coach Paul Brown.

“When you score,” Brown told his team, “act like you’ve been in the end zone before — and that you intend to be there again.”

APPLAUSE and more applause…

If you have not seen American gymnast Simone Biles perform, do yourself a favor.

Go to a YouTube app and type in her name.

Gymnasts generally only attract a large audience at the Olympics, although Biles earned some national airtime by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Game Two of the World Series.

Before she made her toss to Jake Marisnick, Biles (wearing jeans and an Astros shirt) did a standing back-flip in front of the mound.

It all happened so fast, folks watching probably didn’t realize that Simone also threw in a full twist of her body — so that, using nothing but grass as her launch pad, she managed to spin in two directions at once and land gracefully on her feet.

It isn’t just her record haul of medals (25 at the World Championships, six more at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics) that set Simone apart.

She flies so high on her vaults, her dismounts from the balance beam and uneven bars and her floor exercise routine that she sometimes looks as though she’s going to just take off and fly.

A video of one of her vaults can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWaQeUIjaSw&feature=player_embedded.

Several of Biles’ moves belong only to her, and world’s ruling gymnastics body is discouraging anyone else trying a couple of them.

They’re frightened of serious injury.

Never mind the warning: “Don’t try this at home.”

They’re saying: “Don’t try this even if you’re an Olympic gymnast.”

Four of Biles’ signature moves have been named for her – and in the floor exercise, she’s outdone herself to the point where a competitor can attempt a “Biles” or a “Biles II.”

She also has her name on a vault and balance beam thing that, frankly, looks impossible on a four-inch piece of wood.

Simone is now training hard for the 2020 Olympics in Japan, and barring injury or illness, she’s the closest thing to a cinch that gymnastics (or maybe any sport) has ever seen.

Please, the video and links are everywhere.

If you haven’t seen this 4-foot-9 princess just explode into spins and twists — then land like a butterfly with sore feet — you owe it to yourself.

It’s awesome to watch the best.

The best ever.
