ROETTER: Hayden's best choice

| October 25, 2019 1:00 AM

As a Kootenai County resident with family in Coeur d’Alene and Hayden, I was alarmed to learn that, due to overcrowded prisons, the Idaho Department of Corrections is pushing hard for placement of a pre-parolee release center right here in Kootenai County. I can personally attest to the disastrous consequences such facilities have on surrounding communities; consequences that, in the end, cannot be reversed.

As I began to ferret out misinformation and learn the truth of our current situation, I became acquainted with Hayden City Councilman, fiscal hawk, and praised “watchdog” Matthew Roetter. I learned that approximately 17 years ago, the IDOC attempted to build a prisoner release facility in Hayden, covertly putting earnest money down on property near Mr. Roetter’s home. Mr. Roetter was a member of a gallant team who stopped the IDOC in its tracks. Councilman Roetter, who is currently running (opposed) for a second term, has once again assumed a leadership role in this fight, and in fact recently introduced a resolution in a brave attempt to hinder the IDOC’s relentless pursuit.

The city of Hayden is fortunate to have this dedicated, fearless man serve on its Council. Unlike his opaque opponent, Matthew Roetter champions transparency, has years of solid experience, and demonstrates unwavering support for his community. Hayden residents will do well to vote for Matthew Roetter on Nov. 5. Because true leaders don’t tell you what to do, they show you how it’s done.
