Post Falls, Cd'A boys tie for 5A IEL title
• BOYS
POST FALLS — They tied, and now Lake City and Post Falls, as well as Coeur d’Alene, will wait.
Thanks to a 2-2 5A Inland Empire League draw between Lake City at Post Falls on Saturday, the top two seeds to the 5A Region 1 tournament are still to be determined after Post Falls (9-1-1, 4-1-1 5A IEL) and Coeur d’Alene (7-2-1, 4-1-1) finished with identical league records.
“We knew a loss would have guaranteed us second place,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “But a tie puts it in our hands.”
A tiebreaker will be needed to determine the top two seeds to regionals.
Lake City (7-2-3, 2-2-2 5A IEL) will be the third seed at regionals, facing the league runner-up.
Post Falls played a man down after a player received a red card in the second half of Saturday’s match.
“It was a strange game, and it felt like somehow it wasn’t going to go our way,” Lawson said. “But the positive thing is that we played a man down, and got the tie. That in itself was a savior, but the game just didn’t feel like it had a rhythm to it. Both teams like to play with a lot of possession, but it was difficult to get off the ball today.”
Post Falls faces Sandpoint at The Fields at Real Life Ministries on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Lake City is idle until regionals next Saturday.

LEWISTON — Junior McKenzie Mattis’ goal on a free kick midway through the first half stood up, and the visiting Vikings clinched the No. 2 seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament with the victory over the Bengals at Walker Field.
Mattis’ shot, from 25 yards out at an angle from the right side, soared across the goal and into the net, inside the far post.
“It was a rocket,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “It was so well-struck she (the Lewiston keeper) couldn’t get to it. There was only a two-person wall, and she was far enough out she could get it over the wall. She struck it so hard, I don’t think the keeper was expecting a shot.”
Coeur’Alene (4-4-5, 3-1-2 5A IEL) will play host to No. 3 Post Falls next Saturday at noon in the regional semifinals. Since Region 1 receives two berths to state, that winner qualifies for state, and advances to the regional title game on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls played to a pair of scoreless ties during league play.
“Proud of the girls, after a tough loss (4-0, to Lake City on Tuesday),” Vredenburg said. “They grinded one out and got us a win to clinch home field advantage on Saturday.”

Izzy Henkle, Maddy Lasher, Kayla Dearmin and Mackenzie Goings each scored once for Lake City (9-2, 5-1).
“Some new players showed up on the scoresheet, and that’s always a good thing heading into the postseason,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said.
“Really proud of the girls today,” Post Falls coach Steve Mills said. “I think they did a really good job hanging with a really tough team. I think the difference in depth really started to show as the game went on, but overall a lot of positive things to take into the regional tournament next weekend. Trinity Nichols, Kaysha Walton and Katelyn Jesienouski had great performances today.”
Lake City is idle until next Saturday, when the top-seeded T-Wolves host fourth seed Lewiston in the semifinals of the 5A Region 1 tournament at noon at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex. The winner of that game qualifies for state, and advances to the regional title game Wednesday, Oct. 16.

POST FALLS — Sarah Hines recorded a hat trick, Kiley Cutler had a goal and assist and the Panthers clinched their third straight Intermountain League title, beating the Tigers at The Fields at Real Life Ministries.
“It’s always a good day when you can get all three of your starting forwards (Sarah Hines, Cutler and Isabella Lucky) to find the back of the net during the first half,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “It allowed for us to relax and try a few different combinations of players during the second half of the game against a more physical and savvy opponent. Timberlake certainly never let up, so it was good competition from start to finish for our defense that has needed to experience performing under a little more pressure. I was pleased with how they managed things on the backline.”
