Be careful out there
Buyers know it can be a real challenge to find the right home. Our limited inventory is confounding buyers and their agents as they try to find a great house at a great price. Once discovered, that house should be approached cautiously, even if it seems perfect for you. Of course your agent has helped you by providing information on schools, communities, travel routes, etc., and all of those things seem to fit. The house payments are within your comfort zone so you decide to move ahead and write an offer.

Let me first say that education is important. You need to be educated to support yourself and a family. As a grandparent now, I can say that I supported my children in their school years in every way I could and I did it without levies. I am proud to say they all turned out very well, they can write their names and do math in their heads. Now therein lies the crux of the matter. I did it without extra school taxes or levies and I didn’t supply all their pencils, paper, Kleenex, etc. I agree with Stephanie Gossard, we did our parts, now take the monkey off our backs and let those who are using the schools do their part. Let them pay for the levies, the new schools, the extra activities.

For all wine consumers visiting wineries in wine country is one of the really special experiences. The passion the beverage elicits from many of us goes to a whole other level when we are actually in the winery and walking among the vines, it is just different. When any of us visit wineries it is customary to buy wine directly from them, especially when tastings are complimentary it would be rude to not do so. Many of us too enjoy being in the wine clubs from our favorite wineries. It is not only a way to demonstrate support for a business we appreciate but it may also be a way to access certain wines that are winery only, or not distributed.

They suppress stomach acid (stomach enzymes!) to give relief, and, while symptomatically helpful, in the long haul they cause more problems than they help.

Pain: Body-self neuromatrix
What happens in our body to elicit pain when we slip on the ice, take a fall while skiing or get diagnosed with a chronic disease like fibromyalgia? Pain is described as a physical discomfort or some type of suffering caused by illness or injury. We may have always thought of pain as purely subjective, meaning each of us might describe the pain differently, from a fall down the stairs or a crash on our sled. Some might describe the pain as a stiffness with a dull or achy feeling. Others might say it is sharp, shooting or incapacitating in nature.
TRUST: Dump AP, Press
I subscribe to the Coeur d’Alene Press because I want to be kept abreast of what is happening in our area, a very special area! A place many people would kill to live in. Had The Press only reported local news and excluded national and international events, it would not have been as widely circulated as it is. So it partnered with the AP.
SCHOOLS: Impact on society
I would like to answer Stephanie Gossard’s letter that was in Sunday’s Press. My feeling is the exact opposite of hers regarding our tax? dollars going to support public schools. I believe that our educators have been very transparent and worked very hard to get the most for our tax dollars.

By DEVIN HEILMAN
The worst of our winter appears to be over
We got our “January Thaw” last week as temperatures finally warmed up to above normal levels. High temperatures climbed into the upper 30s and low 40s across the region, making it feel almost balmy. Prior to the milder weather, Cliff told me that he had 30 inches of snow on the ground. As of last Friday, that figure dropped to 17.5 inches.

ABORTION: Pro-life preference
It’s pretty tiresome answering the same silly, self-absorbed arguments in favor of killing babies. Only once in my life have I had an open, honest discussion about abortion with a woman who would not give an inch. Without changing her position, she admitted it was a baby, it was a unique human being and not a part of her body and it was innocent. After that confession, she finished with, “but it’s legal and I want to have the right to kill it if I want to.” A horrifying decision, of course, but the only honest one I’ve ever heard. She and I parted with mutual respect — and disagreement.

The most dangerous word in the English language might be “they.” It is used often and very loosely in many letters to the editor. The big picture of chiropractic, beyond pain
When you think of chiropractic, you probably think about neck and back pain. While it is true that chiropractic treatment relieves pain, your chiropractor is generally most interested in improving your overall health by correcting your vertebral subluxations. The vertebral subluxation (less than a dislocation) is the misalignment of one or more vertebra of the spine resulting in abnormal biomechanics as well as nerve root interference. This in turn causes accelerated wear and tear or degenerative changes at that level and alters the communication between the brain and the tissue innervated at that level. A subluxation results in dis-ease processes each and every time.

RESPONSE: Give Trump time
Ms. Sherman echoes the strong reaction of most Democrats and even many Republicans regarding the election of Trump. I can feel their pain. If Clinton had been elected I too would fear for our country.
Ask your audiologist Hear well in 2017!
If you have hearing loss you should make a "New Ear's Resolution" to help yourself hear well. Make that appointment for that hearing test that you have been putting off. Not sure if you have hearing loss or a blockage with wax? Ask for a free screening. Get those hearing aids if it is recommended. Those around you will be thankful!
Tablets and smartphones are a pain in the neck
I routinely have patients come into our office complaining of neck and shoulder pain. When I go out to the waiting room to get them for a treatment, what are most of them doing? Texting. I actually had one teenager send 24,000 texts in one month. What do you think she was coming into the office for? As you might have guessed, neck pain.
RESPONSE: Trumpets for Trump
Apparently Carol Sherman belongs to the Hollywood California club that still hasn’t realized Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party lost the election to Donald Trump and the intelligent and educated majority of the country. She apparently is suffering from myopia and tunnel vision and should go see a good optometrist for a thorough eye check. Since you’re tired of Republicans trying to set you straight, maybe you should wise up and change your voting affiliation.

The impact of oxygen
Once a wine is made oxygen more than anything else, any other element, procedure or accident impacts wine. Sometimes good, at times not so much but it impacts in a big way nonetheless. This is why during the winemaking process winemakers guard against the impacts so diligently. They make sure every barrel is topped with inert gas after fermentation is complete; they limit racking and filtering in many cases because of the oxygen that can be introduced. Bottling lines both those that handle Stelvin twist caps and real or synthetic corks all top the wine with a bit of inert gas before the wine is sealed and foiled.

RESPONSE: Obama opened door
My thanks go to Carol Sherman for her rant against Donald Trump. She does not realize that she helped put him in office. When she voted for the extreme leftist Obama, she paved the way for Mr. Trump.
RESPONSE: On future fears
I am old enough to have been retired for several years, and have gone through MANY presidential elections, and have NEVER seen one where so many people have complained so much about a president-elect destroying the USA before the person ACTUALLY BECAME PRESIDENT. How can anybody complain about a president who isn’t even president yet? This is a tactic that I never have seen before.
NIC men still climbing up the polls
While it is still a long way from finished with the season, the North Idaho College men’s basketball team seems to have settled in quite nicely to the new surroundings of the East Region of the Northwest Athletic Conference.
Ask yourself, are you tough enough?
I don't know about you, but sometimes I wonder if I am tough enough? This time of year especially I think I get awfully contemplative about what it takes to be tough enough to tackle the new year. Tough enough to do what it takes to live my life according to my values. Tough enough to challenge myself to do the best with my God given abilities. Tough enough to weather the storms of life with my heart intact and dancing in my feet.
MLK: Very much something
Sunday in Rann Haight’s “Tomorrow Is…” illustration, it was listed (for Jan. 16) as “nothing happened.” Martin Luther King Day is nothing? I seem to remember Idaho was slow in declaring it, but this seems a grave mistake.
CELLAR: Law and disorder
Being new to the area, we’ve only been to The Cellar restaurant once but we eagerly awaited a return. Now we read in The Press that they are closing because they can’t get their liquor license due to a small limited amount of licenses available for this area and all of Idaho. This restaurant is on Sherman Avenue, not in the middle of a family neighborhood. Good restaurants are vital to a thriving downtown. Good restaurants serve a variety of consumer expectations, including liquor. Would somebody explain the reasoning of this law to us?

It's great to depurgate
To depurgate is to cleanse, purify, purge, un-dirty, clean, rinse. In the spring we depurgate our homes, but January is the best time to depurgate our bodies. Over the past 2-3 months we have overloaded our bodies with the sweetness of the holidays. Many have gained weight, were and maybe still are, stressed to the max, tired and sluggish. January brings new hope. New resolutions to do better, to get the weight and energy back under control. The problem is, now with too many “luxury” foods, it’s hard to stop and get the diet back under control. Let’s face it, the foods of the past season are delicious! Many times, we only eat them this time of the year, making them special. Then we face the addiction. The cravings.

Mr. Gissel, your Dec. 30 article on literacy hit the ball out of the park. You've outlined the problem in District 271 beautifully. Now, how do we get SD 271 to do their job? There isn't a single teacher in SD 271 who doesn't know well which of their students can't read leaving first, second, or third grades. Then, why can't we get literacy of 100 percent for kids leaving third grade? Here is an example of why, and a solution.

Moving out
We have discussed here before “the roll” of real estate. That is the term used to describe how the market moves upward and inward following the major interstate highways of our region. Due to the impact rising prices are having in major cities along the West Coast we are seeing in migration from those cities as sellers capture equity and take the opportunity to get out of high-priced, high-traffic, high-crime and high-anxiety metropolitan areas.

With the cold and snow, so far this winter, the warming center has been very busy remaining open most of the nights over the past 60 days. This has been a brutal winter and having a warm place to sleep is something that is easy to take for granted.

With all the media and Obama Administration excitement over the Russian hacking of the Democratic National Committee email, the real truth is that if the DNC leadership and yes, Hillary and Bill too, weren’t slimy and totally corrupt there would be no story. The intolerant, tolerant
In 2015 I had the opportunity to go through an interview process for a leadership position in a metropolitan city in the Pacific Northwest. It was quite an extensive experience with a meet and greet on one evening and then the following day, a series of meetings and conferences that lasted well over 13 hours. It was a long day, which is fine. What wasn’t fine was the obvious agenda of some of the activists who acted as “concerned citizens” in the community. They weren’t interested in finding out my qualifications for the position, but instead, they were actually interested in playing the “gotcha” game.

Big-game feeding reserved for emergencies
Big game animals are congregating at low elevations, including near towns and homes after December snow blanketed much of Idaho, and with it some frigid temperatures. Some people are concerned about animals surviving through winter, but so far, Fish and Game has only started emergency feeding in Eastern Idaho where a wildfire last summer burned much of the available forage. Fish and Game is also feeding in the Wood River Valley to keep elk away from the highway and to reduce damage.
Ties to the Land workshop Feb. 4 in Bayview
While many landowners would say income from crops or timber harvest is their central ownership goal, most would also mention a place to raise their family, wildlife habitat, and many other cherished ownership values. Many landowners would like to see the next generation of their family pick up where they left off in managing the family place. But too often, they don’t act on this instinct soon enough, or they may have made some effort toward estate planning and a will, but haven’t brought the next generations of the family into the discussion.

The Framers of the Constitution, eyeing an executive branch configuration that might unify the regions of the nation, briefly considered but ultimately rejected, a proposal to establish a plural presidency, an arrangement that would have consisted of a three-headed presidency, one representing each region of the nation: New England, the mid-Atlantic and the South. Opponents of the measure, concerned about efficiency and accountability, prevailed in their warnings about the impact of multiple executive voices in the implementation and articulation of the nation’s policies: unpredictability, confusion, division, disorder and chaos.

BEWARE: Social Security 'reform'
Social Security is in trouble. Rep. Sam Johnson, R-Texas, has proposed a reform plan that will make serious cuts to Social Security. Under this plan, cost of living benefits will be eliminated, the inflation rate is being lowered through a new formula, the retirement age will be raised to 69 and wage earners making more money will see their benefits reduced, even though they contributed more during their working years. The idea behind this is to begin to fix the national debt. Congressman Labrador referred to this kind of move as a “hard choice” during his town hall meeting in Coeur d’Alene last June.

The pricing decision
What is a wine worth? Any wine? That is probably the single most challenging decision that any winery faces, where to price their wine to keep the winery as a whole financially viable, while also ensuring that wine consumers will find value in the bottle. The decision for wineries is far more daunting that it is for customers. After all for customers it is pretty straight forward. I pay “$X” for a bottle I drink it and our palates and preferences ultimately tell us it is worth it or not.

FEES: Return to senders
I’m writing this letter after I was informed that we have been overcharged by the city for our sewer fee. I own a home in Hayden that is subject to the sewer capacity fee lawsuit. We paid for the $18,000+ building related fees to the city indirectly when we bought our home from the builder who initially paid the fees. Why are we not parties in the lawsuit? If a window manufacturer was sued in a class action, the homeowners would be the class parties in the suit, not the builders. Why would the court think this is any different?
MAIL: Keep it public
2017 will again be a challenge for the United States Postal Service. Let’s again “Think outside the Mailbox” while still using the same principles that make the U.S. Postal Service user friendly for all Americans at the best possible price. The U.S. Constitution guarantees a Postal Service for all. Privatizing the USPS would only reduce service to rural areas such as Idaho even more. Expanding services such as banking, and offering U.S. Mint products would help create a financially stable Post Office in each community to create a “Center of Operations.”

Plunging into 2017
COEUR d’ALENE — Hundreds screamed as they beelined from the snowy shores of Sanders Beach into the frigid waters of Lake Coeur d’Alene on Sunday.

Special delivery
COEUR d’ALENE — Selah Glendening was asleep Saturday night, tired from a lengthy pregnancy and an earlier New Year’s Eve party.
Parity reigns again in NFL
Pete Rozelle would be proud.

'A good way to start the year out'
COEUR d’ALENE — In name alone, the 40th annual Hangover Handicap suggests its participants were up hours after the New Year’s Eve ball had dropped.

Janice Rae Jensen of Hayden, Idaho, left us on Dec. 21, 2016, at the age of 61 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Audubon, Iowa, on Dec. 14, 1955, to Raynard and May June Jensen. Janice moved to the Spokane area in 1999 with her two daughters.
The power of the voice
When I was embarking on my “second career,” public speaking, I had a little experience under my belt — member of a Toastmasters group, graduate of Dale Carnegie and a long list of speeches I’d made to community groups and on behalf of various causes like getting a stadium built.

Growth and grief
There were bright moments in Kootenai County in 2016, but the year was marked with many sad events.

JUSTICE: Step up, Idaho
In March 2016, Idaho’s Attorney General’s Office charged John R. K Howard of Dietrich, a white high school player who was accused of kicking a coat hanger into the rectum of a black high school football player with a disability with “forcible sexual penetration by use of a foreign object.” Last week, the Attorney General amended the charge to “felony injury to a child” and offered Howard an Alford plea, allowing the defendant to avoid personal accountability for his actions, and recommended three years of probation. The Deputy Attorney General stated in court that the act itself was “not a sex crime.”

How to make 2017 outstanding
Maybe you’re going to lose weight this year. Firm up, as it were.
Ringing in the new year with Twain, pigskin
More than 150 years ago the brilliant Mark Twain wrote a New Year’s Day column for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, in which he posited this gem, as true today as it ever was: Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community.

New year in the neighborhood
Welcome to 2017. We want to hear from you.
Slow time of the (business) year
Early January evidently often isn’t a time to start a business as the new places slated to open are mostly later this month. Therefore we’re short on “news” except for some classes below and some places we’ve detailed earlier (now in the lower Tidbits section).
2017: What is in store?
No one knows for sure but the indications are that our strong real estate market will continue at least through the first quarter of this New Year. Even with interest rates at two-year highs there does not appear to be a lot of dissension from would be home buyers. The biggest obstacle as reported by the Coeur d’Alene Multiple Listing Service may be that there was nearly 10 percent less inventory on the market at the end of November than at the same time last year. Even so, November real estate closings were up nearly 20 percent last month when compared to November of 2015. We will have the usual report next week as the late figures come in for December.

KINDNESS: Eases the sorrow
Christmas Eve day was not a great day for me, having to face the death of my beloved pet of 16 years. I stopped at the Riverstone Starbucks drive through for a hot drink. When I got to the pickup window, the server told me that the car ahead of me paid for my coffee and to have a Merry Christmas.

Chiefs fall at Tri-City
KENNEWICK, Wash. — Riley McKay scored the lone goal of the night for Spokane in the first period, losing 3-1 to the Tri-City Americans in Western Hockey League play in front of a sellout crowd of 5,869 at the Toyota Center on Saturday.
ISRAEL: A loyal ally
Does any true American really support what Obama just did to Israel? The act of throwing Israel to the dogs at the United Nations pretty much sums up why thinking people are nauseated by this “president” and what he’s done to this country and our relationships around the world for eight years now! Thank God the metastasizing decay has only a few days to go after which America, Israel and the world will begin to heal as a real leader takes office.
Community Thanks
THANKS: Birthday Ball a success
ISP: Tale of complaint
In September, a female driver was rear-ended by a Washington driver who had NO license. The Washington driver became verbally hostile, trying to get the other driver not to call the police and tried to get the other driver to leave the scene of the accident.
TATTOOS: Cover easy, folks
When you apply for a job, you apply for the opportunity to be part of an establishment and become a component who assists them in increasing overall profit margin and therefore increasing your chances of reaping the monetary rewards. It’s that simple.
