THANKS: Lovely in letters

| January 8, 2017 12:00 AM

Does anyone write thank you letters these days? I mean good, old fashioned thank you letters that one has to pen in his/her own handwriting, put in an envelope, lick the seal, put postage on it and drop it in the snail mail box?

I get thank you texts, thank you emails, sometimes a verbal blanket “thank you” sitting in a crowd of people and the thank you that I never get at all. If I don’t get a thank you acknowledgment from a wedding or birthday gift I wonder, did they get it? Did they like it? Should I not give them a gift in the future?

When I get a handwritten card in the mail it tells me a lot about that person. First, they took the time to sit down and take a few minutes out of their busy schedule to put their thoughts on paper. That makes me feel special! I can see their personality shine through the individual handwriting of loops and slants, not of a mechanical type.

There was a story on the news the other day about schools making it mandatory to teach cursive writing. I applauded that decision, which is up to much debate. I hope they continue with the art of handwriting and start with teaching the children to write thank you letters!
