SPIRIT LAKE — Keelie Lawler scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in the second half to rally the 3A Timberlake Tigers past the 1A Division I Lapwai Wildcats 59-40 in a matchup of top-ranked teams in this week’s state girls prep basketball media poll on Wednesday.

“We missed a few shots we normally make and made some defensive mistakes,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, whose team fell behind 16-8 after the first quarter before taking a 28-25 halftime lead. “We finally found our groove in the second quarter.”

McKeeley Tonkin scored 10 points for Timberlake (11-2), which visits Kellogg on Friday.

“I think a big part of it was the wear down factor,” Miller said. “Both teams played really hard, and we were a little deeper than they were. We kind of wore them down with how we played, and our balance, we really shared the ball well. Everyone that played scored. Lapwai is a really good offensively. They’re a solid team and to hold them to 40 points, it was a solid night on defense.”

Koyama Young scored 20 points for Lapwai (10-1), which beat Timberlake 59-52 on Dec. 10 in Lapwai.

COEUR d’ALENE — Hunter Schueller (106 pounds) and Ethan Lillis (160) won by pin for the Vikings, who won the first six matches on the way to a dual win over the Bulldogs at Coeur d’Alene High.

“It was an exciting match, with lots of turns of events,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Overall we wrestled well, but there were a few areas of concern. Our conditioning is something that needs to be addressed. Hunter Schueller wrestled well at 106, and Garrett Ashby had one of his best matches of the year at 126. He beat a really solid kid.”
