COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Vikings kept it close with a 1-3-1 defense, but the visiting Lake City Timberwolves were able to pull away in the second half for a 42-28 victory in 5A Inland Empire League play Tuesday night at Elmer Jordan Court.

Nina Carlson had nine points, eight rebounds and four steals for Lake City (11-2, 1-0 5A IEL). Bridget Rieken had nine points and four assists, Lauren Rewers eight points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, and Keara Simpson six points and eight boards.

“It’s tough to simulate,” Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said of the 1-3-1. “With (Kelly) Horning up top with her long arms, they did a good job taking away passing lanes. But once we settled down, we started making better passes.”

Lake City led by as much as 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Kayla Fagan had 11 points for Coeur d’Alene (5-5, 0-2), which hung close early despite not scoring a point for the game’s first 7 1/2 minutes, and not scoring its first basket until 10 1/2 minutes into the game.

Lake City plays host to Post Falls on Thursday. Coeur d’Alene travels to Hellgate of Missoula on Saturday.
