Trojans hold on late to top Lewiston boys

LEWISTON — Sticky half-court defense and solid contributions from a 10-man rotation helped Post Falls hold on for a hard-earned, 39-37 road victory at Lewiston in 5A Inland Empire League play Friday night at Booth Hall.
The Trojans (9-2, 2-0 IEL) led 25-20 at intermission and extended the lead to seven points after three quarters behind the scoring of junior Jake Pfennigs (14 points, eight rebounds). Then the Bengals (7-4, 0-1) held the visitors to two points in the final period but could not score enough themselves to overtake Post Falls.
“It was a slugfest, a real defensive battle,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “The key to the game was all 10 guys who played for us contributed, especially in our half-court defense. There’s things we could do better, but we’re very happy and encouraged to get a tough road win in our league.”
McLean singled out David Bourgard for his defensive play, and noted his team grabbed four more rebounds than Lewiston despite giving up size at nearly every position.
Bengal football standouts Colton Richardson and Riley Way led their team on the hardwood with eight points each, while Tanner McCliment-Call had seven points for Post Falls, which returns to action Tuesday at Moscow.

“We came out and got a quick start with some fast break points,” Genesis Prep coach Marsell Colbert said. “Wallace went to a zone, and we went cold for a little bit and it took us a while to figure it out and attack it. Hats off to them, they controlled the tempo for most of the game.”

Rachel Schroeder scored 14 points for Genesis Prep (8-2, 4-0 NSL), which travels to Clark Fork on Tuesday. Jayci Blood had eight rebounds for Genesis Prep.
“We had a great start and came out strong,” Genesis Prep coach Debbie Holte said. “It was really good to come out strong and made some good choices. Wallace came back and didn’t quit. It was close at the half and came out strong in the third quarter. We trailed by one and found a way to win. We had way too many turnovers, and that’s something we need to work on. I’m proud of the girls for toughing it out and choosing not to lose. I was really happy with their effort. Wallace was really efficient tonight and hit some shots. They shot the ball well.”
Maryssa Hogamier scored 26 points for Wallace (6-7, 3-2), which hosts Kootenai on Wednesday.
“It was a tough loss,” Wallace coach Chris Lund said. “You can’t spot any team 10 points. The girls fought back in the fourth quarter.”
