Vikings claim Tuinstra title

| January 22, 2017 12:00 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — Mitchell Moffat (132 pounds), Payton Keough (138) and Max Peressini (152) went 5-0 on the day to help the Coeur d’Alene Vikings capture the team title at the Van Tuinstra duals tournament on Saturday at Timberlake High.

Coeur d’Alene, with a mix of six junior varsity and six varsity wrestlers, beat a mix of Lakeland JV and varsity wrestlers in the championship match.

The final was 36-36 but Coeur d’Alene won on criteria, winning eight matches to Lakeland’s seven.

“Max had a big win over (Tucker) Figueroa and Mitchell over (Riley) Dement of Priest River on the day,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Our younger guys are starting to get some confidence against some tougher kids. It was a good chance for our JV kids to get some matches against varsity kids. The guys are making progress, and it’s good to see. We’re just trying to keep an eye on the end of the season and the state tournament, but it’s good to see the progress some of them are making.”

Lakeland assistant coach Mark Johnson had praise for Jack Peed (220) and Tavis Woempner (113), who went undefeated in the tourney.

“Our kids competed, and that’s what we needed,” Johnson said. “We need our No. 2s to compete at the state tournament, because they have to score points for us at state.”
