Davis puts perfect playoff record on the line

Call them the Fantastic Four.

The 2016-17 Coeur d’Alene Press All-Star Pigskin Prognosticators season is nearing its dramatic conclusion. Only four of this year’s players have a mathematical chance to finish among the top three and win free Press advertising for their selected local nonprofits. We’ll also award a quarter-page ad to whomever finishes last, and right now, that’s one of the most interesting races.

Relying on his Facebook friends to inject wisdom into his selection process, St. Vincent de Paul honcho Jeff Conroy has actually lost ground. He now is in next-to-last place, two games ahead of Rob Smith from Findlay Automotive. (We remind readers that Smith inherited the worst record midway through the season and note that he’s actually fared pretty well at this prognostication business. Conroy has no such excuse.)

Meantime, Ryan Davis of Boys & Girls Club used a perfect 4-0 weekend to surge into a tie for second place with Steve Griffitts, mayor of Hayden and a well-dressed banker to boot. The two trail longtime leader Mark Koerner by just one game.

Post Falls football coach Blaine Bennett is still in the running, but he needs some help, trailing Koerner by three games and Griffitts/Davis by two. He can’t gain on the leader this week because they both picked the Pats and Falcons to win (see Page B2). However, Davis has kicked the door open; he’s sticking with the Packers. And who’s gonna bet against Davis? He’s 8-0 in the playoffs — as is the amazin’ Eve Knudtsen.

Only three games remain, two this Sunday and a fairly important one Feb. 5.

There’s a world championship and a bunch of free Press advertising at stake. Talk about pressure!
